geography question

alright so in the film there is a depiction of a sea or lake in the town. where is this supposed to be set exactly and what is the name of the body of water? (i know it was filmed in tajikistan)

I thought it was the Caspian Sea when I was watching, but I am not sure about that.

The only place in Tadjikistan that it could be is the western part, south of Tashkent. There is one lake there. You don't know exactly how big the lake is supposed to be. You can see the other side, but that could be anywhere from a few miles to a few dozen miles. The lake appeared to be salinated. The region looked like a transition zone between steppe and desert. I thought it was the Aral Sea, at first.

Was it? I thought it was filmed in Uzbekistan. That troupe plane had a Uzbekistanian flag drawn on its fuselage. The family in search of the father is travelling to such cities as Tashkent and Samarkand, both of which are situated in Uzbekistan.
The "sea" could be the Aral sea or Aydorkul' lake. The town... no idea. Doesn't seem to matter, really. It's not like anyone's going sightseeing there, is it?

I think the word is pastiche. It's a mashup of Central Asia and the Caucasus; former soviet republics.

That village is meant to be Tajikistan, Samarkand is Uzbekistan, in the wedding scene they're dressed as Tatars and the crooks who break in and put a bag over the father's head are Georgians.

I believe this is a huge lake called Issyk-Kul in the furthest south of Tadjikistan. In fact, it is so large that it's basin creates its own micro-climate much like the Aral Sea once did and also the now fading Lake Balkhash basin further north near the Chinese border.
