This movie has a horrible color pallette and it's too dark.

Ron Howard really failed with the visuals. I find it difficult to watch this movie, it's unpleasant to watch the set pieces. The colors are so drab.

I too just noticed how dark the coloring was. I had never noticed it being so dark and grey. I even asked my husband if he thought it could be from the DVD getting old and worn. But we decided that's just how it was made.

However, it did not take away from the movie enough to make me dislike it at all. I'm a sicker for classics, including old faded black and whites, so I'm perfectly capable of overlooking "picture quality" and enjoying a movie for the movie.

But in all fairness, this was not really meant to be the family cartoon we grew up watching. It's actually a fairly dark story, with mostly adult humor. I don't mind the darkness (visual or story-wise) Ron Howard have it. Now, if Tim Burton had done it and given it his typical spin, I would have enjoyed it far less.

Funny I was just thinking the same thing as I rewatched the DVD. It really looks like very old film stock from the 70s that's lost so much of its colour. Quite an achievement to make Christmas look dull.

Yeah I never noticed it until the day I made this topic I was watching it on TV. I was like wow this movie is quite ugly. They should have put more color in it.

It doesn't look quite right, I agree. But if it were too bright it would hurt your eyes after a while. Plus there'd just be people talking about how bright it was. I had more of an issue with the weird 'smear' look to it like something was on the lens. I didn't notice it in theaters, but at home it looks almost fuzzy and cheap.

It's supposed to look "off"--that's exactly what they were going for

Yeah I figured, I didn't think a big budget remake of a beloved classic like 'the grinch' with Carey/Howard would leave something like that by accident. It still doesn't make the movie any better though. Just because it's on purpose doesn't mean it was a good choice.

I don't think the look of the movie is intentional , just compare the clean crisp colours of the CGI sequences, such as the opening. To the live action whoville stuff. It looks like everything is foggy and dull.
