'The Chamber of Gof' speech

IMHO, the "Chamber of Gof" scene in "Death and Rebirth" when Ritsuko gives her speech about Rei is played a little more flat than in the original TV broadcast version. On the TV version, she actually sounds much more dramatic and much more believeable. On the movie, she sounds like she's giving a lecture.

Anyone agree?

reply

I very much agree. I thought the exact same thing. In particular her line:'These are nothing but spare parts, spare Reis.' I thought that was delivered very poorly. It made the scene quite uninteresting.

reply

At least the 'spare Reis' bit was delivered with a bit of black humour.

What exactly is the Chamber of Gof? Sounds a bit like Harry Potter...

reply

Yeah, it does, doesn't it?

The chamber of Gof is where all the soulless clones of Rei are kept, behind what looks like one big water tank.

Why it's called that, I don't know. My guess is that Gendo played God there, but with imperfect results (the Rei clones are clearly idiots inthe old-fashioned sense), so 'chamber of Gof' is a corruption of the term 'chamber of God' just like how the actual results there are corruptions of nature. I think.

I'm pretty sure it means the "Guf", which in some christian mythologies is where all the souls for humanity are stored. When the last soul is used up, the Apocalypse happens. There is a movie called "The Seventh Sign" that's all about the Guf.

reply

Hm, yeah, that's a better explanation. I saw The Seventh Sign some time ago and was intrigued by the idea of a limited number of souls and all that but I put it out of my mind until now.

You mean in the English dub? I thought the whole thing was kind of flat and uninspiring, like they did it all in one take. It lacks the emotion and feeling of the original series dub.

reply

I agree. In this movie they re-dubbed it and what I hate about it was that the expressions in the voices could've been way better than they are.

reply

I wouldn't go as far as to say that the english dub is terrible, but it's vastly inferior to the original japanese / subtitled version. As with almost any anime you're much better off watching it in its original language, especially an anime as complex as Eva. What I usually do is to first watch an anime in japanese and then in english, that way you can pick up on more of the discrepancies/variations in the translation.

Evangelion: Death and Rebirth(1997)- 8/10

I hated at first, but after watching the Movie again It grew on me. I actually quite like it now, not as great as the series but still good enough. Death and Rebirth for me was a great way to summarize the series on its crucial points, which helps you understand the story as a whole, so to clear up any confusion after seeing the series. And its also good for seeing before watching the series, as it has alot of mystery and has so much depth, gives so much information at once that its all so intriguing.

It also works very well as a movie, I think. the scenes are put together very well, and i love the music, and the Commentary track is a must, as its a 2 part commentary track that continues on the End of Evangelion movie. It also has a few extra scenes here and there which I thought was a pleasant bonus. All in all I like Death and Rebirth.

Its also good for those who don't have the time to watch the whole series (I don't recommend this however as the series has alot of details)
