What did Gendo say to Ritsuko?

The part right before he shoots her, he says something like "the truth is..." and then his mouth moves and she says "you're lying" or something like that maybe. Is this a dubbing issue or did I completely not pay attention, which is completely possible. Did he tell her something or am I just too dumb to understand what's right in front of me?

reply

You're not dumb. They intended for that line to be unheard. I don't think anyone really knows why.

There was speculation that Hideaki Anno intentionally left it out because of the (to put it lightly) uproar that fans caused over the ending of the TV series, it was his way of getting back at them. I also read an interview where Yuriko Yamaguchi (Japanese voice of Akagi) said that when she asked Anno regarding the missing dialogue and how to say the response, he told her to say it as if she's been defeated.

Many people think he said "I needed you." Look for it in the internet and you´ll find explanations.

In the manga (if you want to consider it cannon) he says I truly did love you

I will not fear, fear is the mind killer

reply

"I truly have no regrets"

reply

It was deliberate

He said something along the lines of regretting that he had to kill her
