I just rewatched it and this Is still one of the most dark endings I've ever seen in any show but also one of the most *beep* up by a mile.

When Shinji got on top of Asuka and started strangling her, then started crying, then she looks at him and says "Disgusting." Yeah that really warms the cockles.
