A pretty good movie for it's time.

The extras on the Netflix release had original films shot in the USSR and Georgia.

I thought that the movie was well done.

for it's time (1964) ... what about our time, 52 years later? I found it pretty bad.

reply

You are wrong. This film deserves a solid 8/10

I am am wrong??? I am entitled to my opinion as you are ... but you are not dealing in opinions are you Great and Powerful Oz. Glad you enjoyed the film.

reply

Well, I agree that we may just have different opinions on this film. However, I didn't see anything "bad" about it, it wasn't boring, had a pretty good story, a couple of touching scenes. Why was it bad, in your opinion? And what did you give it out of 10? For example, just yesterday I watched "Werckmeister Harmonies" and thought it wasn't a great movie despite its huge ranking but I still had to give it 7/10 because it was a beautifully done film, I just didn't like it.

I liked the premise of the film ... I just disliked the film itself. Full disclosure ... I really dislike Russian films ... especially from the mid 60's. They feel so "unprofessional" and rough and antiquated. Perhaps it is cultural. Another thing ... I really struggled to like the old man.

5/10

BTW ... Cuckoo & Come and See & The Star & Fortress of War are Russian WW2 films I liked

reply

That's fair. I agree that many Russian war movies "want" to be emotional but fail at the end. Now, older people would appreciate it much much more. For example, I though this film was pretty good but my mother loved it, my grandparents would say it is one of the best movies ever made. I am Russian and I can probably "connect" to this film better than you; my grandparents can connect to this film even more as they were pretty close to that war. Come and See was great, don't think I saw the other ones.

Spot on about the generations! They view the great war differently than i do.

Please make it a point to see Cuckoo ... it is the best Russian film I have ever scene. It was incredibly unique and intelligent and educational. You will thanks me!!!

Also Leviathan is a recent film that had standout qualities.

What year is "Cuckoo"? Or a link? I can't seem to find it here. Leviathan is awesome, Zvyagintcev earlier films are all great too! It's funny that in Russia people say that his movies are depressing but the fact is, Russia IS depressing. Also, you probably heard of Tarkovsky? To me he is a film genius. Last Russian movies that I enjoyed a lot and you might too: "the fool" (durak, 2014) and "Siberia, monamour," 2011
