Iris rode home, asking Lud to let her stay with his family until Lonnie left the hospital. Then she endured her mother's false comfort, went upstairs and packed his stuff and hers into two suitcases. She pitched three partially empty vodka pints into the trash. Her mother had a fit as she left because she simply said she was going out.
