clunky plot device more fitting for a comedy

I'm talking about the ridiculous scene where Colonel Fitts has his suspicions and hopes that Lester is gay raised to near certainty by seeing him interacting with Ricky through the windows of his workout room. The actions of Ricky and Lester and the point of view with which Fitts is allowed to see the activity is so perfectly matched to look like a homosexual tryst that I felt that the movie was being unduly manipulative and unreal. They could have left out the implied salaciousness in this scene, because in the next one where Fitts encounters Lester their conversation leading up to his attempted kiss is so well-written--brilliantly ambivalent yet true to each man's character--that it is enough to give Fitts strong hope that he is not making a "mistake."

It wasn't a comedy?
