Great example of the empty hollowness of the American lifestyle

Lester seems to have a nice life, great job, family, nice house. But deep down he is not happy, he hates his job, his marriage is a sham, daughter is a juvenile delinquent. All the stuff he has is just on the surface, the things he has are what society dictates happiness. The lesson is that no matter what you have on the outside, if you don't have inner peace you will never be happy.

I think a lot of well to do family feel like that. Kind of like money doesn’t buy happiness.

I hate when hes getting sentimental about his HS days and he says something like and im paraphrasing here, "all I ever did was get high and get laid, it was the best time of my life." When I was in HS and saw this movie I laughed at that part and didn't understand it fully. But as an adult it was sad hearing that because I understand what hes saying. You dont give a crap as a kid, its all new, theres no expectations, everything is an experience good or bad, it doesn't matter. But as an adult it has to work all the time, your job, your marriage, being a parent. Everything has to be right or your looked at as being a failure.
