UP AGAINST THE WALL MOTHER

Does anyone know what it means when one of the characters yelled "UP AGAINST THE WALL MOTHER!?"

"I am standing on the mouth of hell and it is going to swallow me whole, and it will choke on me!"

reply

All I know is that it was something Paul Kantner form Jefferson Airplane said in some song.

Exept it had the last part of the mother in it.

I always assumed that it meant put against the wall to be shot after the revolution.
What else are you going to do to someone against a wall?

reply

UP AGAINST THE WALL MOTHER *beep* is actually the full saying. its just that you have no where else to go, so much was happening and people were being pulled in different directions, being arrested for protesting, rebellion basically.

there's just no where else to go...

i'm not sure how clear that is, but thats what i remember.

In addition to a reference to the Jefferson Airplane song, the "Up Against The Wall *beep* was the name taken by the Columbia University chapter of SDS in the post-Weatherman era.

The scene in which this was yelled was during the takeover of Columbia.

in an interview with paul kantner by guitar world, he explained that the phrase "up against the wall mother******" was actually a phrase used by cops (presumably LAPD) to perps during an arrest. he used the phrase in the song "we can be together" from the jefferson airplane album "volunteers" as a way to sort of take a phrase used by the law and throw it back at them. interesting note when the album was first released their record lable tried to say they couldnt use that phrase on album, before kantner informed they already had on the soundtrack to the musical "hair"

A phrase about rebellion... censored for television.
