I only just found out about this but there is no mention of it on IMDB. This might not seem so surprising, since it has never been aired but that goes for the US version of Red Dwarf, which does have an IMDB list. So anyway, check out this abortion here:
They did, in 2000. It was a show called "First Years" which copied This Life practically word for word. Predictably enough, it lasted three episodes before getting yanked.
I wonder why they'd find it necessary to remake it for those of us in the US in the first place. The Ring and Kingdom I can see since neither are in English, but I'm watching Ultraviolet right now, and...it's in English, they're very easy to understand, so I don't see the point of a remake at all.
I asked Ultraviolet writer Joe Aherne that very question at a Q&A on Briitish science-fiction. His response was that, as far as the US networks are concerned, the UK is a foreign culture. Essentially, if it ain't based in the States, the networks don't want to know because they assume the audiences won't want to know. What's really sad is, I'm not entirely convinced he's wrong... Still, the fact that Idris Elba was in the remake does kind of underline what a creatively pointless exercise it is.
As for the US. If ain't set in a US city (called Los Angeles usually), then it might as well be set on the moon, so it figures they'd remake it for US audiences in LA, with less talking and more shootin', and probably a happy ending each episode with just the main characters to link each episode into a series.
Think Ultraviolet series made like Stargate: SG Atlantis (or whatever).
