The DVD - Which release is better, UK or US??

I heard that the US version is better due to the 5.1 audio track, yet I also heard that the UK packaging is better. Neither release has any subtitles, which is quite a loss for me cos English is not my 1st language... Are the extras same on both releases??

Anyhow, I can't make up my mind. :( Could anyone help provide any info or comment about the US or UK version that you own?? Thank you so much in advance!!

Thank you so much for your reply!! I guess I'll go for the UK version then... And If I love it enough, I might be crazy enough to get the US version for the extra special features later. :P

Thanks so much for your reply again!!

The UK boxset in is full screen 4:3 ratio. Does anyone know if this is the ratio that the series was originally filmed and broadcast in, or has it been pan-and-scanned?

reply

TV series are usually filmed in fullscreen by default.

Quote Nietzsche and brag about having read some obscure foreign text. You're still a basic idiot.

Though their being filmed in "widescreen" (usually 1.75:1 for TV) has become much more common over the last few years.

But this show was filmed in 1.33:1 originally.

Thanks.

The UK boxset is 1.33 but with black bars around all sides, small ones at the sides and larger ones top and bottom. The actual visible ratio is about 1.6:1.
So it's likely that it was filmed in widescreen and cropped like this for transmission as a compromise between 16:9 and 4:3 (a common practice for UK dramas in the late '90s) and that format was unfortunately used for the DVD box.

More importantly, why won't they release the rights to Netflix at a reasonable price? I'd love to see this again, but my library doesn't carry it and I'm not going to pay another fee to see a 1998 show.

American version, British version, who cares. Just make something available online. No-one with sense will pay for the DVD at this point. I'm sure it's all over pirate bay etc.

reply

Excuse me, I bought the DVD box and am happy about that.
Because I can watch it whenever I like, without having to wait for Netflix or whatever to get that fixed.

And if you really love to see it again, download it on pirate bay?! Pathetic.
