How many series?

I remember watching this, but i'd like to know how many series were made? Were there only 6 episodes made, and if so, why was it cancelled? Thanks :)

reply

There was only one series of 6 episodes made. Er... im sure someone else might be able to tell you why, I just think Joe Aherne thought that it'd be enough!

ok, thanks. i remember seeing it on tv and have just found it on dvd.

The director only wanted to do six episodes.

There was going to be an Americanized version of Ultraviolet but it would have sucked enourmously so it never got aired.

There is a film just coming out in the US called "Ultraviolet", starring Milla Jojovich - could the 2 be related? To me it sounds basically like a rip off of "Underworld" and those sort of films.

I guess tv producers have to be careful when remaking other countries' shows - the Office and Sanford and Son (sorry but i believe this to be an American version of Steptoe and Son!! ) have become popular, whilst others - namely the US version of Coupling, which was initially intended to be our answer to Friends - has not been as successful.

reply

No! The craptacular CGI Aeon Flux ripoff has nothing to do with one of the best vampire shows to air since Kindred the Embraced. I guarantee it.

I had a feeling Coupling was the British answer to Friends. But if Coupling is the answer, than Friends must have been asking, "Can someone do our show only with more memorable characters and less crappy dialogue?"

As an American, I stand in awe of Coupling whereas Friends is now cast in shame.

reply

Ultraviolet was always intended to have 6 episodes, that's why it's a mini-series, not a series. I believe Ahearne states this on one of the documentaries because of the fear of, as with Buffy, having the thing get dragged out and axed when it becomes painful to watch. Quality, not quantity.

reply

Ah, thanks for clearing this up for me, everybody. I always thought Ultraviolet got axed because people didn't think it was good enough or something. (Which always made me confused, as it was an EXCELLENT show...) It makes sense now. Ultraviolet goes out with a bang, and leaves you thirsty (har har) for more. Which is a better feeling to have than to feel like the show overstayed its welcome, lol.

Spoiler ALERT!!!

No, really...!!!

The reason it ended when it did is because the climax of the series was the discovery of the plans of the Code 5s to initiate, in effect, a war against mankind using mans own shortsighted environmental stupidity. And then the 'meek' would inherit the earth. Once this plan was discovered then the next phase would be the initiation of a 'war' between us and them.

However the war would be a very different series than the original, much larger and far reaching and wouldnt work the same way. In effect you can have a good Cold War Series or a good World at War Series, but its hard to have one series that encompasses both.

Although I'd love to have seen them try it.

As an American and former fan of Friends, I am inclined to agree.

(And this is how I can relate it to THIS series...Friends went on entirely too long. Unlike Ultraviolet. And probably Coupling...I haven't seen them all. [Nor have I seen all of Friends. I stopped watching after the 8th season when I realized it was stupid.])

Coupling was not the british answer to friends. The writer of Coupling does not even watch friends according to an interview i watched... the series was originally supposed to be primarily centered around Susan and Simon, but the other characters were so great their roles were expanded a little. Apart from the fact they are both comedies with three guys and three girls they aren't hugely similar.

reply

Friends aired before coupling, they broacast an American Coupling bu it didn't
make it past a cpuple of episodes as it was so awful, like the office, which i have no *beep* clue as to its popularity.

If Coupling is the British answer to friends, what was the American version of Coupling supposed to be?
I was glad it died soon in 2003. Dreadful to watch.

Why do American film- or seriesmakers ALWAYS have to steal from other countries? Are they really so uninspired themselves?
