Best Episode?

For me it's the 2002 Grand Finale. Barley Pickers Vs the Cat-alysts. While its always sad when one of the teams machines fails, the Barley Pickers is hands down the most spectactular failure ever on JW. ^_^

Personally I loved the jet-racers one. That pulse jet engine was the mutt's nuts!

reply

I've got to admit, I agree with servercat, the episode with the Barley Picker's trebuchet has to be the most spectacular self destruction ever.

reply

Same for me that mini v1 rocket car was great

reply

I won't say which episode was best, but the machine I most wanted to build was "Muncher", the thing that ate brick walls. (Chaos Crew, 2000 UK series).

Unfortunately, people with structural design knowledge aren't usually part of the teams. It was clear to me that the pivot on the picker's treb wasn't adequately braced... for a similar lack of understanding of material strength, look to the Meg's car crusher (2000 intercontinetal special) - they put the I beam on its side, to make attaching the cylinders easier. But if you look at the tables for I beams, you learn that they are at most 20% of the bend strength of the thing oriented correctly. And yup, the beam bent.

got to admit that one was another contender, especially when the hydraulic pipe burst on the "Muncher", ("he can't weld that!!!", "he can weld anything!!!" (edited for politeness)).

I really liked the mileage marathon. It wasn't exciting good but amazing how well they worked.

The special where they had the UK, USA and France competing to build aircraft using Wright Brothers vintage parts and tools was, in my opinion, the most incredible challenge of the series. The quality of all the contenders was outstanding and the winning British entry arguably the most successful scrapheap build ever.

reply

Definitely the aeroplane one. Made me all teary eyed and proud to be British!

reply

Yup. That is the only time in all my years of watching the gogglebox that I have, like a plum, stood up in my living room and applauded the TV. When the British plane went up and up and up it was a moment of absolute delight in someone else's achievement.

The trebuchet smashing up a treat is a close second. Nearly died laughing at that one.

reply

The episode also made me realise just what 'daredevils' the early pioneers of flight were, especially with the problems the US and French teams had.

reply

I like series 2 episode 3 Amphibious Vehicles (Navy Blues Vs The Bodgers) The Bodgers won that challenge despite the Navy Blues Machine smashing the side! The Navy Blues machine would have worked if the the propeller wasn't cut, and the steering could have been better!

reply

The Monster Truck one was pretty entertaining for me.

Also there was a triathalon one where the vehicles had to climb hills, float, & race thru the desert. All I remember is that there were Russians competing. It's been at least 7 or 8 years since it aired.

reply

maybe the best but i think the worst is the collabseable cars in the suitcase - by the time th challenge came in both ideas failed and yet we got to see some fat bloaks on suitcases push their rigs to the finish line - the really bummer is this lasted for nearly 15 minutes of feet and hands pushing with just stupid ending of nothing but some middleaged man doing what 3 year olds do at the park on their little peddlecars just all in all horrible how they let this air on the tele i have no idea but trust me collabseable cars in suitcases was a cool theory in a james bond kind of thing but just was executed in total disaster and the show suffered its same faith-dont waste your time watching this episode -total crum.......

reply

I saw the one where they built it to fit in a backpack.

reply

one of my favourite episodes is the episode where they made remote controlled torpedoes. I Especially liked the torpedo that had an antenna sticking up over the water surface :)

reply

Has to be the UK, US and France episode where they built the planes, it had everything, even a flying machine, amazing!
