No one remembers Tranzor Z?

I used to watch the americanized version as a kid.

There are some DVDs as well as a laserdisc collection of Mazinger Z out on the market.

But they usually ship out form Japan and tend to get a little expensive.

But it is still a treat to watch.

P.S. Koji Kabuto (the hero, pilot of Tranzor Z) is also starring in its sequel called Great Mazinger (well, he stars in the first episodes, then at the end), as well as the conclusion of the trilogy, called UFO Robo Grendizer. Even though he's not the star of the show in Grendizer, he stars in every single episodes of the series.

I remember it very well.

I was already 18 back then, and seeing it made a connection to me: I was addicted to an anime that was a sequel to Tranzor Z, called UFO Robo Grendizer, you guys had it in the U.S. as Grandizer, and was part of the Force Five TV show, a melting pot of 5 japanese robot series.

Even though Grendizer is a "Tranzor-Z 2.0", it is still historically the ancestor of Grendizer, and i have full respect for this series.

I saw a couple of complete collection sets on Ebay. The only problem is they wanted $85.00.

I remember Tranzor Z from my days in junior high and back then wondered why they "stole" the Mazinga robot. I thought Aphrodite A was a huge attempt to cash in on undersexed dorks who had sick fantasies. I also thought Devleen was the creepiest thing I'd ever seen.

(SPOILER)

If I'm not mistaken, all of the bad guys die and in the last episode Tranzor Z was finally destroyed. It has been about 20 years so I could be wrong.

reply

I believe it didnt' get destroyed because they did make a spinoff called
"Great Mazinger" which I have in which the new hero "takes over" what Koji did.
You can find all episodes through P2P too.

You may be right, I haven't seen the series in a LONG, LONG time. I have a very nagging memory of the giant robot being destroyed at the end though. Now it's bugging me and I have to look it up. Maybe the sequel had a new robot built? Well, let me check. Thank God for the internet.

I can't remember if the robot gets destroyed or not. I haven't actually watched the show since the 80's. I do remember at some point that that little ship the the pilot flies into TZ's head was destroyed. I don't remember if that was the end of the series or they simply built a new ship the next episode. I'm going to have to look this up now. Please post some info if you find any.

I know the original spaceship brain thing is destroyed, then is replaced by the more commonly known one that serves as the brain of the giant robot. I believe it happened about midway to 2/3 of the way into the series. The old one looked pretty dumb and had these little wheel-looking wings. The newer one looked like a black and red spaceship.

Big time fan here.

Ok, here's the low-down:
Mazinger Z (or Tranzor Z as I first new it) was the first robot created and was piloted by Kouji Kabuto (or Tommy I think he was called in Tranzor Z). At the end of the series, Mazinger Z over-whelmed by enemies when Great Mazinger, piloted by Tetsuya Tsurugi rescues him and then effectively takes over the job of protecting the world.

PS: the little vehicle used by Kouji to pilot Mazinger Z was called the Hover Pilder (or Hover Glider in English) and was replaced by Jet Pilder (Jet Glider) later in the Mazinger Z series.

Also, if you have watched Tranzor Z, you would have seen bits of Great Mazinger as well, as when they edited it for American audiances, they sort of mixed shots from the two different series together, so sometimes Tetsuya appears instead of Kouji and Great Mazinger appears instead of Mazinger Z. (This can be seen especially in the first episode of Tranzor Z when Tommy's grandfather is explaining the powers that Tranzor Z has to Tommy. The lighting that shoots from Tranzor Z's fingers is actually a shot of Great Mazinger using his "Thunder Break" attack. Also, the long shot of 'Tommy' docking with Tranzor Z as it rises out of the ocean is once again actually Great Mazinger and Tetsuya.

Another series Grendizer (Grandiser? for the American version) sets place after Great Mazinger and is quite different in that the hero and his robot are actually from outer space, instead of being from Earth. I personally didn't really like it :\
Also, Kouji makes a few appearances in this series with Mazinger Z =)

In 2000, an OVA series and later (in 2003) a movie called 'Mazinkaiser' were released which basically sets place in an alternate version of the Mazinger universe where both Mazinger and Great Mazinger are fighting enemies together but an even more powerful robot "Mazinkaiser" is discovered. This version does not include Grendizer.

PS: I recently changed my name display name from "TheMaskedGunman" to "Alachas"

Very good post by themaskedgunman on that one. Thanks very much.

I wish they'd destroyed the Bobobot or Aphrodite A... both of those robots annoyed me for some reason.

reply

Yes, thanks for the info.

I loved Tranzor Z although I always thought Bobobot was like a "special needs" robot. I do remember my mom not liking Devleen as the soldiers always responded to their orders as "Yes SirMaam" and my mom referring to some reference (possibly a comedian) about a transgendered cartoon character called (G I don't know) as in it doesn't know what it is...

Hey Look! It's Enrico Pallazzo!

dude, it's was my favorite cartoon.
