Henry Skreever episodes

Anyone like these? I honestly don't care for them - they are just like the Simpsons episodes with Angela Buttons - so obviously ripping off Harry Potter it's crazy. As an avid HP fan I find it insulting. LOL

Parodying something isn't the same as a "rip-off." That being said, I either never really "got" the whole vegetable parody angle they were going for, or it was a lame joke to begin with. I guess maybe when you're locked out of the continuity, terms from any series can sound like any random gobbledygook... that may have been what they were going for. Who knows.

But they got the whole fandom craziness thing down pretty good, at least on a superficial level. And it was a great way to add some depth to Prunella's character, too. I know people who were "that" crazy about something. I've never been one to sacrifice my sense of sanity for some sort of fictional media or something, though.

That's true. I have to admit I am one of those crazy fans. LOL I have been to the wizarding world of Harry Potter 4 or 5 times, I've been to a HP convention, done a HP movie marathon, went to see Potted Potter, and I'm going to wizardcon in June. So yes, I'm a crazy HP fan. LOL But at least I'm in good company.

Those aren't things you should be bragging about.

Why not? I'm no different thank a Trekkie. I have a brother who's nuts about comic books. In fact, he's the reason I got into Harry Potter and he's only 3 years younger than I am and he's a teacher.

I thought the vegetable theme of the books was hilarious. It set up well the joke where Prunella did an online search for a copy of one of the Henry Skreever books only to be annoyed by the result "Let's go bowling with cabbages." Online searches were pretty unreliable back then, especially AskJeeves, which was what was specifically being parodied.

I like Henry Skreever and Angela Button. They show how fantasy series can have random crap that look ridiculous from an outsider's point of view but that rabid fans eat up.

The parodies are flattering, not insulting. How they make the fans look crazy, now that is insulting (and I mean "insulting" in a good way because the shows portray crazy fans accurately. Good on Arthur and The Simpsons).

They have parody everything Pop-culture from Superman to the show itself on Arthur. Some in more ways then one. There is going to be some reference or other to pop culture. There was even references to "Phantom of the Opera" and later "Frankenstein"

reply

Really? I think they suck. Just like Harry Potter does. I never liked HP even when it first came out and everyone was going crazy for it. I was in middle school around that time, circa 2002/2003. 😣

I always thought the episodes were pretty good. A really good one was the last one when Prunella was competing with Marina to see who would finish the last book in the series first. In the end, they both admit they skimmed through it just to beat each other.

One thing I DID find insulting was in "Buster's Book Battle" when Arthur mentions he just finished the new Henry Skreever book. However, in that episode I just mentioned, it was supposed to be the last book in the series. OK, it's a minor gripe, but it's always weird to see Arthur, a show with generally strong continuity especially for an educational cartoon, mess that up.

well some eposides might take precedent for other episodes. For example in the series. For example "The Blizzard" is suppose to be before "D.W.'s Snowball Mystery". D.W's bike ride takes place prior to another eposde where we see her ridding (the bike she got in the above mentioned eposide).

reply

Yeah, but with "The Blizzard," that was intentional. This seemed more like an oversight in the writing.

suppoedly "What Scared Sue Ellen" takes place after this but some people think it's before Arthur's Pet BUsiness

reply

Hmmmm, never heard about that. That episode always seemed pretty set in season three.

I was never a huge Harry Potter fan, but I kind of like those episodes.

I don't mind them myself, but I'm surprised the newest seasons are still doing it, considering Harry Potter is a bit old-hat these days. The Hunger Games books kind of took over in the past couple of years. On the other hand, it might be a little difficult to parody that.

reply

Disney Channel's Jessie did a parody called "The Thirsty Games" in one episode, but that demographic is probably a little older than what Arthur is targeting.
