What's everyones opinion on them graduating from Third Grade?

Took them long enough.

Long overdue.

If the show continues on, maybe the move will prompt some fresh changes/storylines.

reply

I'm not convinced they are moving on to the 4th grade, the episode about them finishing grade 3 was just an episode with no significants. The season that just started still has them in grade 3.

If they continue the show (which we still don't know at this point), I'd be very interested in seeing the new storylines, as well as D.W. and the other kids now being students in Arthur's school. SO many opportunities there.

I didn't realize that! That would be a great thing to explore, actually.

Actually, they could do an entire episode about the kids adjusting to how tough fourth grade is compared to third. I remember feeling a little overwhelmed back when I first got into the fourth grade since that was when I was first introduced the concept of having to switch to different teachers for various classes instead of having just one for all subjects. Also, I'd like for them to switch things up. Maybe have some of the kids in one class, the others in the main class with Arthur. They could also touch upon Prunella beginning to grow up since fifth grade was when a lot of girls in my class began to wear make-up and distance themselves from 'kiddie' stuff, including younger kids as friends.

I know we got an episode already where they go from second into third grade, but I don't think they really mined it enough. It was mostly the class worrying about Mr. Ratburn being a tough teacher. Speaking of which, I hope they don't pull a Boy Meets World and have Ratburn end up as their fourth grade teacher again. I mean, it does happen (I got the same homeroom teacher in 10th and 11th grade), but still. They should cover new ground and not just keep the status quo 100%.

reply

It's actually really funny you mentioned that about Mr. Raburn because I'm actually watching "Boy Meets World" right now 😉 My guess is that they'll end up pulling a "Boy Meets World" in another way by promoting Mr. Ratburn to school principal, especially with Mr. Haney's voice actor's death. Sure, it'd be a worn out concept by all of us older viewers, but it's the perfect set-up for the writers.

Heh, this would be a perfect opportunity for the writers. I actually wouldn't mind that. I also didn't mind Feeny as principal, but then he returned as their teacher after season 4 and even one of their professors in college.

On that note, kind of odd that there's no tribute episode planned for Mr. Haney/the voice actor. I thought they'd have an episode about dealing with the death of a loved one (did they ever do something like that? I can't recall...).

reply

Yeah, I was a little surprised by that as well. The only episode that ever dealt with any sort of death was "So Long, Spankey" for D.W.'s bird we as viewers only briefly met. A lot of kids' shows are afraid to "go there" when it comes to deaths of characters that have become very familiar to everyone.

Arthur has never done the death of a character before. I think if done right, it could be a good episode that will also be a send off to Mr. Haney's voice actor.

And Mr. Ratburn will most likely be their fourth grade teacher or still in the show in some way. You can't get rid of Mr. Ratburn. Who else will barge into classrooms asking for cake?

Don't you hate it when horror movie posters are scarier than the movie itself?

Well, I just watched The Last Day and it's more or less confirmed Ratburn will be their new teacher since he states that he will be moving onto the fourth grade. I can't help but sigh a bit at that. I actually liked Mr. Ratburn, but he doesn't need to be their teacher in order to remain on the show. A lot of the faculty at the school are still around despite not being in the classroom with the kids.

I just wish more cartoons could be bold and try changing things up. Maybe this will be an unpopular opinion, but I actually liked M.C. as a potential teacher for them (which pretty much won't happen now). It might've been fun to have an airheaded hippie type to teach, maybe also clash with Mr. Ratburn and the other teachers due to his unorthodox methods or something. But yeah, Hey Arnold brought in a newer teacher midway through its series, and kids didn't mind at all, and I think most prefer Mr. Simmons to...whatever-her-name-was.

reply

Can't believe it took them forever. They were only in the second grade for a few of the early episodes (or seasons? I forget).

The show started with them either going into the 3rd grade or just leaving 2nd. There was never really an episode with them in the 2nd grade, basically just flashbacks like an episode when Francine reminded Muffy of her lying in the 2nd grade.

The way this show is now, I find it hard that Arthur is still only in the 3rd grade. Their mentality has never been of 3rd graders more like junior high school. But like most animated shows, the characters never really grow up. Look at Bart and Lisa Simpson, they have been kids for 25 years.

Wrong. Most of Season 1 was them in 2nd grade.

reply

No, they were already in third grade, for the most part.

reply

I think you need to watch the very early episode again, bruh.

NO eposide of Arthur was every set in Gr.2. We only had TWO episode flashbacks only that had Arthur and co in Gr. 2. The one about Arthur's glasses and Muffy being new and lying about math.
