What nationality is Francine?

She kinda looks African American, or a mixture of black, hispanic, and maybe Indian.

reply

She is Jewish. Int he Christmas special, she said that her family's menorah was from Poland, and so, her ethnicity is Polish Jewish.

Lots of people think she is black. I think that is because her voice actress is black.

reply

Yeah, she's Jewish. I think Brain is the only African American because also in the Christmas episode, he mentioned that his family celebrated Kwanzaa.

reply

Do you mean ethnicity?

reply

I used to think she was black, but then noticed her last name which is Frensky. It's also interesting that since Francine is Jewish, her father is a garbage man. Not to sound racist but it's interesting that the Jewish family seems to be one of the lower class compared to the rest of the characters.

In Francine's defense, her dad's a garbage man, which probably doesn't pay the greatest. And I don't think the show's ever disclosed Mrs. Frensky's career. Feel free to correct me if I'm wrong 😃

They never said what Laverne Frensky did for work. Now garbage collectors actually get paid handsomely this day and age, but I doubt Oliver gets paid enough that his wife didn't have to work, but in all fairest, I've never met a Jewish family that was hard up for money.

I always thought Francine was black, and still feel like that's how the character was originally envisioned, but Frensky sounds Polish to me. So Polish?

Well, to answer the actual question ("Jewish" is a religion, not a nationality) she mentioned at some point (can't remember the exact episode) that her family came from Poland even though her surname sounds more Russian, hence the "sky" part. I'm not sure though if it was her mother, her father or both that came from a Jewish background though, so there's not much I can say about that.

I don't know if Marc Brown had intended her to be Polish or something else before that episode came along, so I guess the explanation behind her skin color is a mystery.

krisbudz14 - That's a misconception, it's both a nationality and a religion. My mother is half Jewish born in Belarus, her father (my grandfather) who was Jewish had his nationality listed as Jewish in his Soviet Union passport. I've never heard of a Christian having his nationality referred as Christian.
