Curious about certain Ottawa locations used in the film

Hi. I grew up and still reside in Ottawa. But there are a few locations in the film that don't look familiar to me:

(1) the house that Mr. Tyler resided in (it looks like it's somewhere along the Rideau Canal or Dows Lake)

(2) the office building that the little girl is driven to

(3) the golf course and go-cart track. There's palm trees at the gold course, is this supposed to be Ottawa?

Any Ottawa natives who know the answers to these please let me know. I'd love to see them up close myself. Thank you.

I remember the big deal they made about shooting this movie here in Ottawa back in the summer of 1998. I cant' help you out with the house or the office building, although they look familiar. The golf course and go-cart track is Thunderbird Go-Carts on Conroy Road, between Walkley and Hunt Club. I used to go there all the time. Apparently, they filmed a cameo for the late Jim "Ernest" Varney there, yet they never used it! Those palm trees must have been either potted, fake or digitized in. Dont' remember seeing any growing around here!

Jim Varney was never filmed. He would have been good in the roll though.

I don't know why I'm answering...will you come back to read this?

The film was shot entirely in Ottawa and environs except the title sequence.

There were no palm trees brought in for the film at the golf course. The windmill was not brought in from the Netherlands either.

The house is in Dunrobin on the Ottawa River I believe.

There were a few celeb cameos that they were supposed to film. Casey Kasem & Phyllis Diller (at CJOH's studio), Jim Varney (Thunderbird Go-Karts), & James Earl Jones (Supreme Court building). James Earl Jones was the only one whose scene was kept for the movie. Too bad...

reply

I don't know about Phyllis Diller or Jim Varney but Casey Kasem and James Earl Jones's scenecs did make it into the movie. The Judge was pivotal; the Casey Kasem scene was cute, and demonstrated that he was becoming more and more like a father.

My bad, I forgot that Casey Kasem's scene was included as well. I wanted to go to the Pinecrest Chapters where they filmed the bookstore scene at the end, but I didnt' have the time. Oh well...

The office building is 555 Legget Drive in Kanata. It's just east of Terry Fox Drive, now between Alcatel and the Brookstreet Hotel.

Hey, I spent 5 days on this movie as an extra.
Everyone has already answered your major location questions though.

A couple interesting facts for you though...
-Apparently Jim Varney cancelled just before shooting at Thunderbird Mini Golf. He was supposed to play the guy running the course.
-Glenn Kulka, former football player, moonlighted as a security guard on set. He was really nice.
-Another security guard was let go after one day for giving an interview to the media.
-the day they filmed at the Supreme Court, it was very hot and a lot of extras waiting outside were getting sick. Dean Winters insisted that the crew bring them inside and give them water.
-the scene where Jenny's mom and her boyfriend are talking in the car was actually filmed at Thunderbird as well.
-originally, Jay Leno was going to play the talk show host, but due to scheduling conflicts, they brought in Casey Kasem instead.

It was a lot of fun, and the whole cast was really nice. Yasmine Bleeth was actually nice, but most people didn't meet her. And Dean Winters was friendly. He would come up to US to chat, instead of us having to approach him.

Anyways, I'm glad to see the movie is on DVD. I only have it on video and would love to keep it well preserved.
