I think they both were open to it to varying degrees. Clu struck me as a follower. He'd be all for the theory as Fi explained it, but Jack could then put doubt in him just as easily.

With Carey, I feel like he legit had questions about some things and Fi helped him explore them. However, he also allowed Jack to talk him out of belief at times, but the reason seemed to have more to do with achieving comfort in his world. Because once you believe, maybe it can hurt you.

I think Clu was a believer.
