Much better than expected.

When I first rented this movie, I figured it was going to be just another asian/action flick that would offer filler for the night. What a great movie! Each character was just as wild as the next, and it LOOKS fantastic. And what about the elvin hit-man? I couldn't get that bathroom scene out of my head for days. Now I'm a proud owner of it. Excellent addition to go along with "Beat" Takeshi and Takashi Miike dvd's.

Yeah, Sharkskin Man and Peach Hip Girl is a pretty damn good movie. I'm not sure if I would compare it to anything done by Guy Ritchie-- maybe the spirit is the same, but the style isn't, and there have been crime caper movies done by people other than Guy. I suppose that there are small traces of Ritchie here and there, but it's really QT's influence that shows itself here. I never thought that someone could be inspired by a guy like QT, but it's clear that Ishii really likes his work.

And of course, none of that bothered me at all. I thought it was a really good time. Of course, Asano Tadanobu is one of my favorite actors around today-- the four films I've seen him in have all been great (Last Life in the Universe, Zatoichi, Sharksin Man and Peach Hip Girl, and Ichi the Killer), and he immerses himself in each role he plays with finesse that few actors can really show. Plus, what kind of guy can make an awkward sex scene (however brief) as humorous as Asano does?

yea i like it aswell, very manga inspired in loads of ways, what with Ishii also doing the animation in Kill Bill. However, slightly off topic, barring Audition, i cant stand Miike Takashi!!

is to put a weapon in his hand.

This looked and played out like a spacey Coen brothers movie with a really cool soundtrack.
I liked the weird little part-time gay hitman who stole the movie with his cute, but creepy weirdness and that amazing old car full of cables and antennae.
I wasn't expecting the best movie ever, so I wasn't surprised that it had its weak moments, but overall it was fairly pleasant way to pass 90 minutes or so.
The big guitar tune over the opening titles certainly got my attention. The slide guitar piece over the end credits kept me listening to the last frame. In between, the score was always bubbling away nicely when the action began to stall.
Looked good, felt good. No complaints.

Ugh, QT sucks. He ripped off a lot of Japanese movies, like, way before with RD...

Ditto here...I wasn't sure what to expect, but I really dug this movie. The beginning was a bit slow, but the movie really picked up, and by the ending I was more than amused...I think the movie really picked up and became more entertaining when Yamada entered. Heh...I loved Yamada...

Wow, this is one of the first times I've ever seen where everyone in a thread agrees. I thought this would just be a bloody shoot-em-up (not like that would be a bad thing), but I was so pleased when I met the unforgettable characters, one by one, and I wholeheartedly agree that Yamada stole the show. He was so weird!!! I hadn't seen this in a while but I just saw a preview for it on a different DVD, and I was reminded how much I enjoyed the action and the characters, especially that WEIRDO Yamada, who served as great comic relief! BTW did anyone notice one of the other actors (who did NOT play Yamada) happened to be named Yamada? I wonder how he felt about Ishii using his name for the flaming queer character?

"Enough of that technical talk, Foo!"

Is there a trailer, I can't seem to find one anywhere.

There's a trailer for "Shark Skin Man...." on the Kino edition of KAOSU. It's unsubtitled.

Yamada was probably one of my favorite characters, he was so unique (that, and it's nice to see what 'Calcifer' looks like) and funny. I REALLY liked the filming techniques, where a character would be standing in one place then would 'jump' to another point. Very sharp, slightly confusing, and I would say I definately got a Guy Ritchie feel...only....Japanified.

Why do you hate Miike Takashi? I can't help but love his films despite the fact they often leave me bleeding internally.

reply

I feel it was the exact opposite, I expected much more from it

I can't give it anything more than a 5
