They didn't die?

Was I the only spectator who expected someone to die at the end of this movie?

I honeslty thought someone wouldn't come out alive...

'Cause I used to Know..."

I kind of thought it would be the guy that became a woman...I thought that that woman in teh bathroom would literally beat him to death.

I thought maybe the mother would die

I agree. It's sad the trend I see where just about every good lesbian-positive movie, at least the ones I watch in English, inevitably have one of the two lovers die at the end. In the several that I've seen, only this one, Bound, and But I'm a Cheerleader stand out for me as having a real happy ending.

It's like a message from God that says "Some people like you without wanting you or someone you love dead."

Or something.

Seriously, this film made me feel nice. Dramatic in all the right ways and just an all-around good film. At least that's my opinion. And as is pointed out, no one died. Just proof that a great alternative-lifestyle film can be had without ultimate sorrow at the end.

Really, I hate the trend. Some other movies could've just been perfect without the death.

i really thought that maggie or her mother were going to die after those stupid homophobes torched the bookstore.

I have never actually seen a lesbian film where one of the charecters dies, and I've seen quite a few. (Oh actually tell a lie-the old lady in if these walls could talk 2 dies). Anyway I don't think it is such a trend in modern gay films, in older films yes-unhappiness and death, but modern films tend to be more positive.

hmm.. The admins deleted the other post listing some movies in which the characters do not die, so here is a new one (I know you mentioned some of these). I do not feel this list to be spoilers, as lack of death is not a plot twist in most movies. Some of these are short films.

Watching You [Short] (currently not in IMDB, but has been submitted).

Traveling Companion [short] http://imdb.com/title/tt0218678/

Imagine Me & You http://imdb.com/title/tt0421994/

But I'm a Cheerleader http://imdb.com/title/tt0179116/

D.E.B.S. http://imdb.com/title/tt0367631/

D.E.B.S. [short] http://imdb.com/title/tt0337953/ (This is the short version on which the full length version was based)

Bound http://imdb.com/title/tt0115736/

Better Than Chocolate http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0168987/

Cosa Bella [short] http://imdb.com/title/tt0829126/

The Truth About Jane http://imdb.com/title/tt0256459/

*CENSORED* Åmål http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0150662/

Perhaps somebody could provide a list of lesbian movies where one or more of the main characters die, so that those who wish to avoid such movies can?

A starting list: High Art, Lost and Delirious.

reply

The last one, *CENSORED* Amal, was also released under a less censor-worthy name: Show Me Love. Just in case anyone's curious like I was. :)

You aren't alone. I honestly thought that Maggie would die. Maybe murdered or accidently. This was the first lesbian film I've seen but I honestly thought Maggie would die. For example this is the one love story that ends happily. I wasn;t in the least suprised at the death in L'Ennui or A Ma Seour

reply

Yeah i know. kind of hard to believe that tony didnt die because he was at ground zero!

reply

well i didnt think anyone would die, that would've been kind of out-of-the blue dramatic.
yea tony would totally be somewhat injured after a gas leak exploded by his face!! he was all walking around, having conversations.
but i was happy though, cuz someone doesnt have to die for it to be a lesbian movie or a good movie.

Desert Hearts, When Night is Falling, no one dies (but I won't say if they happily or unhappily).

For a second there I thought the mom was dead, when Maggie was running around the store yelling for her!
