Navy movies depicting enlisted sailors

Just a few thoughts........

I served 20 years in the Navy and was enlisted. Most of my time was in San Diego.

Watching Antwone Fisher brings back alot of familiar scenery of Naval Station San Diego, NAS North Island, downtown San Diego, the Coronado bridge, etc.

I wish Hollywood made more Navy movies depicting enlisted sailors in a realistic light. Most of the Navy movies out there only center around story lines about commissioned officers and depict enlisted sailors as not being intelligent and having no value to the story or history of the Navy.

Examples include Top Gun and Crimson Tide.

In Top Gun, the scene where the Air Boss CDR runs out of the office and runs into the First Class Petty Officer bringing food and drink down the P-way is a bit shameful.

In Crimson Tide, the scene where the overweight Third Class Petty Officer boards the bus and the LT (James Gandolfini) treats him like *beep* and makes him do push ups because he didn't address him as sir. That scene also irks me.

Antwone Fisher and Men of Honor are probably the most realistic movies in regards to the enlisted sailors. They should be since they are based on true stories.

The Hunt for Red October also depicted enlisted as being very valuable with PO2 Jones being the sonar tech who was tracking Red October.

Agreed, I served 4 years in San Diego and had similar thoughts. The guys getting off the ship in Mexico was particularly stereotypical. No one hoots and hollers, people just walk off and then go party.
