Why was there a gas chamber shown?

Since there were no gas chambers in Theresienstadt, why was there a need to make one up? Is it because you can't have a prison movie without one? I also thought it strange that gassing jews and burning bodies was mentioned. That was a big secret not really widely known until after the war.
