From a literary perspective (since I tutor literature), tragedy makes us think about the movie. It gets us actively thinking about possible ways to not let that tragedy happen to us. I agree it's sad and unpleasant to experience as a member of the audience. I call your attention to the reason why senior high school students in international schools are required to learn tragedies like Macbeth, Othello, and Hamlet.

Most of us would prefer a happy ending, but after it ends to our satisfaction, we'd likely forget about the story.

I welcome your comments.

HAha! I'm right there with ya. Totally would rather enjoy my 2 hours in heavenly bliss, than -ugh!- learn something. I'm 22, how much more can I possibly learn? Well, Antique ( http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Antique_%28movie%29 ) is a gay themed asian movie with a happy/ dare I say / normal ending. Awww, but I've spoiled it! now :p I loved the movie, though.
