Sebastian smoking

Things aren't in movies just because, either the cinematographer or the director put it in the movie because it's trying to envoke emotions to the observer.

So I was wondering what you think the smoking means.

Sebastian starts off smoking little butt cigarettes, he's always smoking.
His mother starts off not smoking, by the end of the movie she's smoking.
Hank starts off by telling him to not smoke around him, by the end she's also smoking.
I wasn't paying attention to when he smokes, as in, what provokes him to smoke and at what exact points he smokes.

I was wondering what you think this is supposed to symbolize?
or if you think it means anything at all.

I think all it is supposed to mean is just teenage rebellion. As far as Henrietta and his mother I don't know. I would guess that Henrietta might be smoking to bond with his son or maybe to relieve the stress of going to a graduation with a group of people who don't really appreciate him. And his mother? It seems like her life has gotten progressively worse since leaving Henrietta (alcoholism and smoking often go hand in hand). But really I don't know how much of this is intended meaning or just found meaning.
