read "catcher in the rye" by caulfield. I rarely read beyond harry potter books, but this book will leave you speechless just liek this movie.

Also a movie very cloase to my heart (as this one may become) is "Almost Famous" by Cameron Crowe. It's an amazing coming of age story.

Also see "Y tu Mama Tambien". it is in spanish, but the DVD has subtitles. One of my fav movies of all time.

LUCK!

Catcher in the Rye is written by Steinbeck, Holden Caulfield is the main character.

reply

Um, actually, Catcher in the Rye was written by J.D. Salinger. Steinbeck wrote The Grapes of Wrath and East of Eden.

As for any other movies to watch, Donnie Darko just stands out in my mind. Excellent movie with Jake Gyllenhaal, Drew Barrymore, and Noah Wyle.

Another good, underrated movie is Playing Mona Lisa, or look for something from Cameron Crowe, i seen you guys already mentioned Almost Famous, also are Elizabethtown or Vanilla Sky. Try also something from Sofia Coppola
Greets.

I can't say that anything is really like Sebastian Cole. That is what I loved about it. Just a very good piece of filmmaking.

hi this is nothing 2 do with dis but i just wanted to know if any of u guys know a gay themed film where a guy (poss teenager) goes to stay with a family while travelling i think and sleeps with all four memebers of the family (mother, father, son and daughter)?

reply

that is Teorema it is a very old Pier Passolini movie the antogonist is not gay he is just sort of benevolent. Terrence Stamp plays the young man (the daughters boyfiend) warning, the movie is VERY slow paced and subtitled in parts i believe.
ummm Have any of you people ever seen the Graduate? Also all of the SE Hinton movies like The Outsiders, Rumble Fish, Tex There are also the 70's goodies like Foxes or Over the Edge.

What other movies are like this? It depends on what you liked about this one. If you mean movies about teenagers that are realistic, honest, human, heart-felt, non-cliche, with unique characters and situations, natural-sounding dialogue, and great acting, then here is my list of similar movies. (I'm repeating some other people's suggestions, but what the heck--great movies bear repeating!)

ALMOST FAMOUS
THE SLAUGHTER RULE
TADPOLE
DANGEROUS LIVES OF ALTAR BOYS
L.I.E.
NICO AND DANI (Krampack) (Spanish)
YOU'LL GET OVER IT (A Cause d'un garcon) (French)
THE ICE STORM
THE VIRGIN SUICIDES
DAZED AND CONFUSED
RAISING VICTOR VARGAS
EDEN
EDGE OF SEVENTEEN
WHAT'S EATING GILBERT GRAPE?
HAROLD AND MAUDE
ORDINARY PEOPLE
THE MIDDLE OF THE WORLD (O Caminho das Nuvens) (Portuguese)

Also, the great, short-lived TV show UNDECLARED fits in here too. It only lasted one season, but it's on DVD.

Agree? Disagree? Discuss!

i just had to rewatch this for something I'm doing but the reason it speaks to someone like myself is the era it's set in the 80's it's a trip down memory lane. Everyone is going to have different movies that remind them of a different time in their own lives. I don't know how old all of you are but since none of you clicked on to the ones I brought up I would have to surmise you are all much younger than me so the movies i bring up probably won't mean much to you. Foxes has meaning for me because i remember that period, I remember having a crush on Scott Baio. I remember squeezing myself into jeans so tight i had to hold my breath to zip them. The things you remember are different. When I was a kid we all thought that Ordinary People was a giant pussy movie, mostly because most of us didn't have families with money and because our parents wouldn't go to the trouble of sending us to in patient facilities. We all thought it was *beep* You all may think different. It's all in the eye of the beholders. I loved the t.v. show Freaks and Geeks. That to me is what school was like. The outsiders while a bit before my time, I could relate to because alot of us parented ourselves or were figuring out a way to get the hell away from the ones we had.

I grew up in the 80s too. Yeah, I remember tight pants! Not too easy on the nads. The Outsiders is a favorite of mine, too. It's a beautiful pic, and full of beautiful actors. I haven't seen Freaks and Geeks, but it is created by the same guy who created the show Undeclared. Check it out! As for The Outsiders, well, that movie hit me really hard, because I also tried to commit suicide. That kid's problems had nothing to do with coming from a rich family. Sebastian Cole had rich parents too. I will check out Foxes and the other movies you mentioned.
