Still a Favourite

Recently re-watched this and must say, it is really brilliant. Road trip movies are a dime a dozen, but this one is head and shoulders above the rest. First terrific script, actors on the top of their game (Scaarsgard, Headly, Rampling, Hart), not to mention the dreary scottish/norwegian scenery doing half the emotional work. Should have received more interest on this side of the pond.

Sorry that you are only getting a reply 6 years after your post (unfortunately, the best movies are the ones very few have seen, it seems).

I just wanted to say I totally agree. This certainly isn't a feel good movie, but this movie fires on all cylinders. The actors are top notch, and it actually feels like they are really father and daughter. I also love how human they all are. The script, as you said, is fantastic, and never seems contrived. You're also spot on about the scenery adding to the overall effect. It's like half of the movie the pathetic fallacy does the work for the filmmakers; it's brilliant. I really wish there were more movies like this. It has the perfect combination of comedy/drama/morality etc. At the end of the film I felt like I was saying goodbye to people I had known for years. The character development was some of the best I've ever seen in a film. I re-watch this about once a year, and love it just as much every time.
