DVD versions

Anybody know the difference between the two versions of the DVD found online?
Both covers have the two main actors walking next to each other, but on one cover the background is bluish, while on a different version the background is kind of orange. I am worried that I might buy a crappy version if I purchase it. I rented the blue cover from Hollywood Video and the picture quality was superb, but the version on Amazon.com has the orange cover, which is weird that they are not the same. If anyone knows if the orange version looks as good as the blue version, please let me know. Thanks.

One is released from Mei Ah, the other is Universe Laser. As far as i can remember the Mei ah version is housed in a blue keepcase and features the picture of them taken from further away with a blueish tint to the picture. This version features the standard film and trailers.

The Universe release has special features like press release (where they shave lau ching wans head), making of, etc. That one features the more close up picture of the two, and a more natural tint to the picture.

I'd go with that version. Hopefully a Hong Kong Legends release is in the works!

Fingers crossed Hong Kong Legends do release this on DVD, as this is one criminally (excuse the pun)underrated film. The copy i have is on VCD and the subititles are miniscule - do the DVD versions have larger subtititles? Both Tony Leung and Lau Ching Wan put in excellent performances and they feed off each other brilliantly - they obviously never took this film on for the paycheck.Direction-wise, Patrick Yau comes into his own - the end result is a super-stylish,visually stunning, brooding and slightly unsettling movie. There is also a tremendous atmospheric score as well, to add to the whole nightmarish quality of the hellish Macau depicted. I've seen a lot of Hong Kong Films, as well as Japanese, Korean etc and this deserves to be up there with the classics of East-Asian cinema - trust me i am not going over the top here. It's worth watching for the scene in the car alone - you will never see that in a Hollywood production!

How about any differences in the quality of the transfer (sound/image)? Admittedly, usually the companies that take the trouble to include special features also take the time to get the transfer quality as high as possible in terms of sound, color, and clarity. However, that's not always the case:

If you check out the comparison at the above link, it looks like the folks at the Criterion Collection were beat out by an obscure German firm, at least in terms of the image transfer.

HKL sounds like the equivalent of the Criterion Collection for HK movies.

I, too, would like to see this movie "done right." I saw it years ago at the cinema. Thanks to a poster at the "I Need to Know" board, I now know the title. It's just too bad the people that issue DVDs aren't as excited about the film as I am.
