Travellers is a relatively recent term for what, in the time this show is set in, would have been termed gypsies or romanies. In this case I think it's definitely an anachronism.

OK, fair enough, but I grew up in England and don't recall them being called anything other than gypsies up north.

That explains a lot. Where I come from, "travellers" is a euphemism for cockroaches.
