Series 3 sucked, Series 2 the best

i felt series 2 was the best with high notes when Linda works in a potatoe factory and Daisy!!!!

Series 3 was just too far fetched and the only enjoyable episode was when Linda's in hospital but that also shows how low Tom is and how self-centred the two were, and i think it just went a little too far.

I agree Series 2 is the best series, i felt that was when the series was on its high. Kinda like Series 2 of Bottom and come to think of it - Series 2 of Red Dwarf was pretty good too... and series 2 of Black Adder lol..

the list goes on it seems..

Oh the Rick Cheesecloth episode was hysterical.

Series Three was ok, but the jokes sometimes were a tad too gross and were just silly instead of being funny like the last two.

I think part of the problem with the series was the fact that the it was getting difficult to come up with mew stuff. When you think about it not since Steptoe & Son has there been a comedy that predominantly relies on just two characters using one set. Other comedy shows have a larger ensemble cast and use various other locations to come up with different ideas and situations.
This show was mostly set in their flat and that limits what they could do.
The BBC never really supported this show like they did Ab Fab or Blackadder etc and gave them a budget that means outdoor filming would become possible or they could bring in more characters to give the show a fresh look occasionally.

you'd be wrong there about blackadder.

the first series was made on a big budget with huge casts and fancy sets but after it failed to hit expectations the BBC almost cancelled it only to agree to do a second series with ben elton writing alongside curtis and on a much smaller budget with rickety old studio sets.

series 2-4 of blackadder were filmed on very small budgets.

I did like series 3 but it was my least favourite of the three. I think the problem with the last series is that Linda and Tom kind of became caricatures of their former selves.

If you watch an episode from series 1 and then an ep from series 3, the characters have changed quite a lot. I know there's such a thing as character development but I think Linda became too stupid by the end and Tom became too nasty and self-centered.

There were still lots of moments in series 3 that made me laugh my head off but I just don't think it's as good as the first two.

As you correctly point out the first series of Blckadder did have a big budget etc and was scaled down in the following series. However I stand by my original point that the BBC didn't give it the same level of support the other shows got. Both Blckadder and Ab Fab got plenty of trailers on TV. How mny did this show get? When the new series of the other shows started there was plenty of coverage in the Rdio Times and pushing the show in the other media. Again Gimme didn't get that.

As for expanding casts, Blackadder ws getting people such as Rik Mayall, Robbie Coltraine etc coming in as guest stars in significant roles. Ab Fb also got "names" popping up as the shows went on and got more popular. All Gimme got was quick cameos by the likes of Patsy Palmer and Dale Winton.
You could compare those two with another of these "vulgar" shows when it comes to getting major pushes within the BBC at that time.

Pushed
Ab Fab
Blackadder

Not pushed
Bottom
Gimme Gimme Gimme

You can see it still today. Why is it that Men Behaving Badly was a smash hit on BBC1, yet Two Pints is shut away on BBC3? Why won't they give that show chance to be seen by a bigger audience?

It wouldn't have anything to do with who is behind it by any chance? French and Saunders and Richard Curtis are the darlings of the BBC so their stuff and anything they do is fine.
Little Britain gets a cult following and moves to BBC1 despite sometimes offending people. League of Gentlemen and Red Dwarf gets cult followings and stays on BBC2

When the BBC want to get behind something and push it they will but if they don't want too then you're stuffed. Unfortuntely this show was one that they had no interest in and never relly got behind.

Series 3 was just too far fetched

Sadly, I absolutely agree.

I'd never seen Series 3 before, and am watching it now for the first time - two episodes in, and I'm not sure I want to watch any more of it. The two lead actors are still amazingly clever, but it's like they're just trying too hard.

It had the same writer as the first two series, so did he just get desperate for laughs or was it the new director that was to blame? Even Jez and Suze and Beryl seem forced in their performances in the third series; everyone's gone from a kind of innocence in their characters back when the show began to a general heavy-handed self-conscious mugging for laughs.

What a pity. At its height, the show was deliriously outrageous, but the episode I just watched - the one in Tom's dressing room at the theatre - was so bad I almost turned it off.

You might very well think that. I couldn't possibly comment.

The whole of Series 1 and 99% of series 2 (minus the episode Stiff) and the first episode and fifth episode of series 3 are good. The rest I just can't watch at all. The magic is gone from most of series 3. It feels like it is made for the sake of it the vibe that made the first 2 series is no more.

Series One.
Series Two (minus Stiff).
Series Three (only the episodes "Down and Out" & "Singing in the Drain" are good).

The storylines were far too contrived and the fact they made linda about one step away from a full blown retard really let it down. One of the stengths of gimme gimme gimme was lindas one liners and ludacris view of herself but in series three she seemed to be extremely stupid and child like all the time. I find the third series annoying as hell. The first two are gold though.

Didn't see this when it was on TV, but have been watching the boxset over the last few days. I absolutely agree with your comments 100%.

Linda went from a feisty, delusional woman in series 1-2 to a child-like character and it just seems bizarre watching some of the lines and responses that she comes out with throughout Series 3... Her anecdote during the dinner party in episode 5 is a good example. And the ongoing quest of locating her brain in the hospital episode was also ridiculous and not IMO funny at all.

Terrible loss of way in the writing and character development.

One gag after another - especially when the singing coach enters. Everyone gets funny lines - I was constantly laughing!

Love this show!
