A plot question

Why is Heloise poisoning people in the house? What does she gain from it? Has she gone mad? Any help here would be appreciated.

I believe because she hates them all. She hated the Grandmother because the Grandmother never approved of her. Valentine was the daughter of the dead wife and she hated her because of that.

I think also for the money she might inherit if anything happened to VALENTINE!!

This a plot lost in translation from the novel to the screen.
In the book the Villefort's have a young boy who is a child of Heloise and M. Villefort (while Valentine is M. Villefort's child from a previous marriage.)
She does indeed hate Valentine, although she orchestrates the death of the grandparents from both sides of Valentine's family in order for their fortune to be inherited. Then planned to murder Valentine, so that her son would inherit it all.

Left without explanation in this miniseries (as many of the characters motivations are) as the boy was obviously cut out.

Well made series, but the unnecessary and frankly ridiculous changes are frustrating me, and this is supposed to be the most faithful adaptation!

Look at this tangle of thorns
