I thought that in 1999 the widescreen format (16 : 9) had long been in existence. Not so? But if so, then the makers of this movie must have been stupidly short-sighted. Why should I watch a movie made by clueless people?

4 : 3 is a liability, as practically all display equipment has 16 : 9 format, leaving wide black spaces left and right when watching this movie, looking very ugly.
