I wish I saw this in theaters!

I wish I was able to watch this when it came out in the movies. Unfortunately at the time I was only 4 years old so obviously that didn't happen. Since this movie was an instant classic, I always knew he was dead all along because even in elementary school kids talked about it because of their parents. Albeit I always saw parts of it as a child, I never saw it from beginning to end until I was like 13 or 14. My point is this is one of the movies I always yearn to have been able to watch it's opening weekend and be just as dumbfounded as everyone else (not as a 4 year old of course, you know what I mean). My question is what was it like for those of you who saw it in theaters when it first came out? Do you remember how it felt when the ring fell and the music started? Did you ever watch it again in disbelief that he was really dead and witness everyone else's reactions? I always ask my parents what it was like and love to listen to their experiences.

It was a fantastic experience to see it in the theater. I remember that the moment the ring dropped (before the whole music started), something just clicked and I gasped, putting my hand to my mouth. My sister, who was sitting next to me, asked what was going on, but then immediately realized it too. She was almost gasping for air, that's how shocked she was! Our friend had already been told what the twist was and she was very much amused by our reactions. I was so enthusiastic about the movie, I told my mother all about it when I got home, something I still regret because after seeing the movie as well she really wished she hadn't known.

Wow that is a wonderful story thank you so much for telling me! That's awesome! I'm sorry you regret that but it's completely understandable. I know what you mean, sometimes something makes you so excited you just want to talk about it to everyone. My dad always tells me when I ask about his experience that it's the only film he never figured out the twist of. Both my mom and dad said that even when the ring fell they didn't understand it. That they didn't know until the music started and the iconic "I see dead people" was repeated. Personally, I get goosebumps every single time I watch that scene no matter what.

Amazing scene, takes me back every time! Every now and then my sister and I still discuss the impact it had on us. Only the ending of The Usual Suspects does the same thing for me. That was also a shocker.

reply

Wow that's exactly what we do! Unusual Suspects was great as well, unfortunately I was aware of that twist too :(

reply

Ah, that's really a shame. I didn't even know that movie had a twist when I first saw it, so it was a double shocker for me.

One of the best moments in film in all of history...

I was so intrigued that I went to see the movie again the very next day, and couldn't wait for that scene. As soon as it came on the second time around, my heart started racing out of anticipation. Such a great payoff.

I also remember feeling a sense of knowing something pivotal was about to happen that the rest of the audience wasn't aware of since it was the first time they were seeing it, and I could hear all the gasps and whisperings around me.

That is great. Yes the music definitely hints that it's not over yet. But we just don't know what is going to happen. Maybe the wife was cheating all along? Maybe they were going to reconcile? When the ring drops you might even think it's her ring. Nope, not until that music starts playing and the boy starts talking does it start to hit. For the people who have guessed it, I am just amazed. I guess most twists but even when I knew the twist for this I was still flabbergasted.

I saw it in the theatre and it is the only movie I remember seeing where I was squirming with fear and anticipation. I was blown away by the end and remember walking out of the theatre very affected and just trying to process the whole film. The scene which really got me the most was when the boy was in the bathroom and the lady in the pink robe walked by....that made me need my safe word...prickly hair standing on end just thinking about it, lol. Other older movies which stand out for me...The Others (a little later) Fried Green Tomatoes, Stir of Echoes and Schindler's List. They all are very different from one another but have a 'how is this going to turn out' element to them which make them stand out over time.

reply

Yes that indeed was a scary scene. I have seen all those films except for Stir of Echoes. They're all great movies. I have looked at Stir of Echoes before on here and have considered watching it, but for some reason haven't yet. Based on the other great movies you listed, I should definitely give that one a watch it seems! Thank you for the recommendations :)

Someone on a discussion forum of a board game site spoiled the ending for everyone there. That site no longer has those forums. Despite knowing I still went to see it. Still enjoyed it. My sister gave me the dvd recently. Watched it today. Enjoyed it again. So there!

chaos reigns

Excuse me, but what an ass! I'll never understand people who like to spoil things for others. I'm sorry that dueche spoiled it for you haha. Hope you still enjoyed it nonetheless, I know I did.

I lived right near where they were filming and was so caught up in looking at places that I knew...so when the ring scene came on I was totally floored!!!! Just got the blu-ray disc and I am watching it now ?

reply

That's awesome! They filmed it near where you lived?
That's a perfect word to describe the feeling: floored. I still feel that way when I watch that scene!

reply

Oh one more thing...Great topic/post...thank you!!!

reply

Thank you! I love all the responses I've been getting. Oh and how was watching it again on blu-ray?

I remember my big sister came home from seeing it at the drive through and wouldn't tell my family anything about it just that we HAD to go see it as a family, my dad guessed right away (but he always does!) the rest of us were all super surprised, it's a good memory thanks for bringing it back :)

Your sister did a great thing haha! Thank you for sharing your experience. What made your dad figure it out?

I'm 33 now and watched this movie when it came out in the cinema, I was 16. It was great, such a good movie and amazingly constructed to not give away the twist. I had not watched it again until today, 12th of February, when I asked my two czech flatmates (22 and 23 years old) if they hadn't seen it. They had not, didn't know anything about it. I asked a few questions to make sure, sometimes with foreigners the names get changed, but, no, they didn't know the twist.

So I played them the movie and it was amazing to see their faces when the reveal came. For me it was also nice to watch it for the first time after knowing the plot twist, you notice how well crafted the whole thing is. Great movie!

I'm going to go see Split this week to check if he's actually back to form. ;)

Wow that is amazing! The fact that you haven't seen it since the Theatre and that your roommates have never even heard of the film. That's hard to find now, even if someone hasn't seen it they usually know the twist. Did it feel different for you this time you watched it? I'm wondering because there is that 17 year age gap, as you've grown and matured, I wonder whether you took different aspects from the film this time around. That's awesome thanks for sharing your story. So sad we won't be able to have these kind of conversations anymore because the boards are gonna be gone.
