Why did Liv Tyler get such high billing in the Lord of the Rings?

Arwen is in like 2 scenes in Two Towers and Return of the King, yet she's on every poster, and listed as 3rd when the final credits run. In comparison, Eowyn is in FAR more of the series (save for Fellowship) and is arguably a better, more pivotal character.

Liv Tyler had a bigger name.

It's like when jack Nicholson got top billing over Michael Keaton and Arnold Schwarzenegger got top billing over George Clooney.

They got higher billing in a Batman movie than Batman.

Marlon Brando and Gene Hackman were both billed before Christopher Reeve in the original Superman movie too.

Jason Lee is arguably the lead in Mallrats. But he was unknown. Got third billing.

I would say because the romance between her and Aragon was a big part of the whole trilogy. Her and Cate Blanchett were the most high profile female characters in the series.

Probably so women who don’t watch the movies think she is an important character so they will be more engaged in it when their husbands and kids watch the film, and so Liv Tyler can appear on talk shows to promote the film

She was the second biggest name in the cast, after Ian McKellen, and she looks great on a poster!

Billing is contractual, negotiated by agents.
