Grima Wormtongue sheds a tear

Did anyone notice that at the scene where Saruman is calling on the Uruk-hai to go to war?

This sentence has nothing to do with what I just have written above.

reply

Yes.

The land dreams in a false peace, and for a while all evil is withdrawn.

reply

The scene was probably too epic for him.

reply

Noticed it for the first time today, although I've seen the movie probably 15-20 times.

Grima lusted and/or was in love with Eowyn and when he saw the massive force that was going to attack Helm's deep, he was certain that Eowyn was going to die. His tear was for Eowyn.

reply

I think it's interesting that the tear was unscripted.

reply

I don't think I ever noticed that LOL.

reply

Crocodile tears, most likely.

When the regime of Dragons fell, the reign of Stags took over.

I don't recall the book Grima showing any regret for his betrayal of Théoden or his association with Saruman, but my impression in both this and the later death scene is that he's feeling sincere regret for it but feels powerless (or is too much of a moral coward) to be able to repent until it's too late.

reply

I think he's either astounded to tears by the mass of power his new master has acquired or really devastated that he's getting more than he bargained for. As selfish and duplicitous as he may be, any human being however good or bad couldn't help but be overwhelmed and shocked to see the price that comes for their personal desires. I'm not sure how Wormtongue really believes in that tyrannical agenda that Saruman is going for; it's one thing to be greedy for riches and women, but another thing to embrace this new regime of monsters taking over the human race. He didn't know what place he'd have in a world ruled by orcs and for all he knew he could have been as disposable as all the other humans because Saruman didn't care for Grima in the least and would have fed him to the orcs if he had enough of him.

reply

What's funny is how such a massive army of Uruk Hai could assemble en masse in Isengard, without Wormtongue even noticing lol!!! It's as though he just woke up from a long slumber, and all of a sudden ten thousand Orcs just happen to show up at his doorstep?

reply

Wow I never considered his tear be about either his regret of betrayal, or a sudden worry for Eowyn's fate. I always just took it that it was either a kind of sadistic 'hard on' about seeing how strong his side was , and the likelihood that they would win, or just being overwhelmed at seeing something so grand the likes of which he'd never have even dreamed of.
Like someone back in 77 shedding a tear durring Star Wars with the massive Devestator rumbling into the scene blasting away at Tantive IV
