Battle at Helm's Deep - Why only 1 volley of arrows???

Battle at Helm's Deep was truly extraordinary and mind boggling to watch. I don't think a better battle sequence was ever filmed.

Once thing that really bothers me was how sparingly they used the archers - both human and elves.

Is there a a tactical explanation for waiting for orcs to literally come crashing on the walls to fire?

It almost seemed like the defenders were holding back on arrows because they wanted to fight hand to hand.

If you were commanding, wouldn't you just rain down as many volleys as possible???

There were probably additional volleys that we just never saw on-screen. The battle certainly lasted much longer than it seemed to as filmed. We got the short version.

It does seem a bit odd. I mean , the one human accidently fires an arrow early and Aragorn is like ' hold! ' Hold? Really? I'd imagine you would want to be shooting as many arrows as you can in what little time you have until they are up ladders and on you. I can see not wanting to waste ammo on shots that might not hit anything , and you're more likely to hit a target when you can see the 'whites of their eyes' , but usually especially in these ancient or fantasy battles a huge volley of arrows takes out a significant number of enemy troops.
