This movie really sucks, only if you have read the comic...

I know. This is not a remake of the comic. But if you read it, you can not forget it. And this movie just makes me angry every time I see it.
I love Ron Pearlman, when he has a roll made for him. But Hellboy is not made for him. And him making the roll for him does not work. Hellboy would never take a kids milk and cookies and not thank him. And this movie is so well made. But it does not work. I try and try to watch it and enjoy. Hellboy 2 comes closer, and does not make me as angry. Still, this movie is *beep*

Humor was good though despite the storyline which made no sense.

Man is a military animal, glories in gunpowder, and loves parade.

Not really.

I saw worlds burning. I saw more; I saw the birth of a star.

"This movie really sucks, only if you have read the comic" Trust me, it sucks some serious ass whether you've read the comic or not. It was one boring flick, man. I've watched it twice now. I sat through it the first time and hated it. Then I see all these positive reviews and try to watch it again (I've been wrong before) and was still bored 5hitless.

It's thanks to fanboys that this pissy franchise is getting a third installment. Del Toro has better films to make!!

I've never read the comics and I liked "Hellboy" just fine (tho I liked "II" better, which is rare, at least for me)...

I also like Part II better.

Can't stop the signal.

Agreed. It is less gritty. But that didn't disinterest me.

Can't stop the signal.

reply

Agree. II is only slightly better. These films, while visually appealing thanks to Del Toro... I simply don't like Ron Perlman as the main character. And almost all the scenes were a bore action-wise.

I've read the comics, and this film was GREAT! It did do well with the tone, though I would not entirely say it was perfect. It was still a lot of fun, and a GREAT representation of the character. I find myself imagining Ron Perlmans voice whenver I read the comics now. As for the cookies, frankly, he probably did thank him, just offscreen. They very much made the character true to himself, even if they dded a love subplot (which I enjoyed, I do not mind the film being a little different). If you want something more in line with the comics, watch "Sword of Storms" or "Blood and Iron".

reply

Both excellent suggestions. I really enjoyed them both, but kind of forgot about them. I will have to check my rental store.
I have no problems with movies making big changes to comics (All you need is Kill comes to mind) and I really really really wish I could like these films. I own both 1 and 2 on bluray but have not been able to sit through the first one yet. Hopefully someday.

reply

I am glad you did! I bought them both on blu-ray as soon as it came out, and I also own both movies on blu. One of my biggest regrets when I moved to China was not bringing them, but at the time, there was a lot of mayhem, and I did not have the most time to grab everything I needed *sighs*. I also left my comics, due to weight restrictions, but they are safely in storage. Still, I hope to repurchase them here. I do hope you do get the chance to sit through both films, as they both have their own merit, and are far better than the average Superhero fare that comes out these days. Both films actually have a lot of heart, and are earnest about being what they are, but almost every Marvel film I see is more concerned about just being Marvel (though I think Guardians of the Galaxy was an exception).

I own one and two on bluray as well and just ordered the two animated movies on one bluray. But takes two weeks to ship to Japan.
I graduated highschool in 94 when seed of destruction landed on shelves. Almost have the whole collection, but moved to Japan and missed the final few arcs.
But picked up the Hellboy megabundle for $50 on digital Darkhorse during a sale. If you have a good tablet or monitor, it's a good way to go.

reply

Wait, you're in Japan? Really? Whereabouts? My long term goal is to find work there, but for now I am teaching in Nanjing. Nice deal on the megabundle! I will have to look into it! Right now I am downloading what I can, until I can get back to the US and pick up what I left behind.

I think Snow White says it best here -

Thanks for replying to a two year old drunken post. But the gif link didn't work.
I should probably try watching Hellboy again since it's been some time and i really want to like it. I own then both on blue ray. The second i enjoy much more.

I've never read the comics, but I thought it was really enjoyable. I suppose I had nothing to compare it to.
