Gruffudd as Pip

is absolutely inpenetrable and diffuse ...a shade of gray. Who knows what he's feeling at any point? There isn't a moment with him that's memorable or vivid.

He was a good Pip. IG made clear "Pip" wanted a new life, and that included Estella. Gruffudd effectively showed the conflict with his past in trying to get both.

"Mr. Willoughby, you are not welcome here."

I thought he did pretty well with what he had. He was good in his first scenes, and during his farewell to Magwitch, those being the parts where the character is closest to the book. Unfortunately whoever wrote the screenplay decided to make the older Pip angry and vindictive about almost everything, with few of the positive characteristics Dickens gave him. Gruffudd was fighting a losing battle from the get-go.
