In all honesty, I think that the overall runtime of this multi-part documentary/compilation is much longer than five hours. For some reason, they haven't released the entire thing on DVD. It was originally released on VHS in several different installments, each covering a particular horror subgenre...vampires and zombies, Frankenstein and mad scientists, etc. The entire set can be found on VHS in a 13-volume set. Though if they wanted to do it properly on DVD, I'm sure they could squeeze it all onto three or four discs.

Unfortunately, no one's bothered as yet.

It's simple, it's because there is 2 versions: The 120 minutes version serves as an introduction to the 5 DVD-set which runs for 12.5 hours on 5 DVDs. They did the same with "A century of science fiction". You have the the 2 hours special for an introduction and the 5 DVD-set that runs for 11 hours. My suggestion would be to pass the 2 hours one and buy the 12.5 hours one instead! I got both 5 DVD-sets on amazon for less than 30 CDN$, not bad at all for 23.5 hours of documentary!
