Betty’s age?

Naomi Watts was in her early 30s when this movie came out, but was Betty supposed to be younger? She sometimes comes off as a girl just out of college but I don’t if that is to make Betty seem more naive/immature than what her true age is or if she really is supposed to be in her early 20s.
