Although it isn't director David Lynch's greatest cinematic work...

... and to quite a bit of extent, it is a little derivative, in some scenes perhaps even a little too much, of director's previous works, including the great "Twin Peaks" TV series and its great underrated movie prequel "Twin Peaks: Fire Walk With Me" (1992), as well as some of his other films like "Lost Highway" (1997), "Blue Velvet" (1986) and "Eraserhead" (1977) and it does also borrow a little from Bergman's classic "Persona" (1966) among others, it is still overall a very good film, definitely Lynch's best 2000s movie and still overall very much worth seeing.

A lot of his work has that "in the same universe" feel. But yeah, I do disagree. I think of Mulholland Drive in the vein of what Roger Ebert described as "David Lynch . . . working toward "Mulholland Drive" all of his career."

On a side note, I like to think of Lost Highway, Mulholland Drive and Inland Empire as Lynch's "unholy trinity of Hollywood films" as all three films are centered exclusively in LA/Hollywood with a shot of the Hollywood sign in each film.

I'd also like to add that it's my favorite film of all time.
