"The worst movie I have ever seen."

This was said by my film classmates in college after we finished watching it in class. Although I was not shocked about them saying it, I was still so disappointed in them.

reply

They are right, this movie is crap.

reply

The worst movie ever?

reply

It's one of the worst movies that I've ever seen in general & certainly THE worst movie I've seen that is inexplicably highly regarded.

reply

" worst movie I've seen that is inexplicably highly regarded. "

THAT JUST ABOUT SUMS IT UP.

reply

That's funny. This strikes me as exactly the kind of movie that would appeal to film student types in particular. So much weirdness and symbolism to break down and discuss.

Personally I didn't like the film all that much. Far from the worst ever though. It's very well acted and made from a technical standpoint.

reply

This is hardly the worst movie ever. Hyperbole has ruined good discussion.

reply

Is this a community college film class? Anyone who knows about film wouldn't say such a thing. Even if they didn't like it, they should be able to give reasons why they would say such a ridiculous thing. Honestly, this is why films are not very good these days. It is these types of "film students" who actually get into film making. Sad.

reply

Not community college. My classmates were idiots. There were about three people who knew who Kurosawa was. How can these be film students if they don't know who Kurosawa was?

reply

That is sad. Anyone who has an interest in film should also have some knowledge of the industry and not just their personal preferences. Like I said it is idiots like these who get into the film industry to try and make big bucks. They don't care about films with artistic merit at all.

reply

Anyone who thinks this is the worst movie they have seen, needs to see more movies. This is an excellent film.

reply

I mean, even if they don't like it, worst film ever?

reply

It could be a fantastic movie for some.

Film is art. Monet takes me to a place that no other artist could take me. Scorsece does the same. Tarantino as well. When I look at a painting by Basquiat I can feel the pulse of NYC. This is why we look at art!

Sadly, we spend our time arguing about what is good art and what is bad art.

Art is subjective. It is personal. How dare someone chastise another for liking a piece of art.

I'm not a David Lynch fan.

I have seen all of his movies and I conclude that he's a fake who creates weirdness for its own sake and not to have meaning. He also has an ugliness about his works that I think is cynical and negative.

From what I've read, he worked in a mental institution once and I think he got grossed out by that, which I understand. However, the things he finds "creepy" and "gross" are actually sad if you have a more evolved way of thinking.

He's like Tarantino only instead of weirdness he is obsessed with violence and racism in a dysfunctional way.

reply

A bit superficial of an analysis, butI think you properly touched on his gimmicks, which are bothersome.
Like Tarantino, lesser artists get stuck with their gimmick and think that's style.
It's a fine line but it's there, and Hollywood loves to pidgeonhole artists and art to market it more easily.

reply

If Lynch has something deep to say, I'm interested, but I don't think he does.

I think most of it is just crazy shit.

I loved Dune though! If you look at the story, it's about extremely bizarre people in the future and he captured so of that.

I truly hated Eraserhead. It was perverted trash and I can't forget it although I saw it a LONG time ago.

reply

Boh, Eraserhead is not that bad, it's interesting in a distorted way and it is meant to be a perversion of the real world. A bunnyhead baby? I think it captured the horror quite efficiently. I'm not a big fan either, I also get annoyed when he seems to be weird for weirdness's sake.

Dune is awesome, I would change just a few minor details (2nd half pacing and some sci fi elements) and just call it a classic. Nonetheless most every critic and viewer still consider it something to be remade properly (which Hollywood will not get, exactly because they lack the balls and crazyness of Lynch).

I think most of his message is "I see my world not as straight as you see yours". That's as deep as he gets, implying your messages are not that deep either.
See, A Straight Story (which is quite a deep movie).

reply

I was going to mention A Straight Story which is completely different from anything Lynch has ever done. It was also rated G, which is really bizarre.

reply

I don't know how you could sit through eraserhead and say it's okay. Everyone staring insanely at the dinner table as a turkey spazes out pumping black fluids.

That's just shit designed to be uncomfortable.

However, Dune is great and he really did a very good job with the setting. It's a fairly dumb story, in my opinion. But, the setting is great.

I can't imagine the new version will have the guts to try and depict the types of people that setting would produce.

I never saw A Straight Story. I HATE the BOOMER generation and how they always must make stories/songs about "country folk" where some old farmer grunts and is a "simple guy" when the filmmakers are rich cokeheads, etc.

reply

I like aprox 80% of Lynch's catalog. This movie is not in that category. There are some slick things he does in this film but they are small parts. This is my 2nd most hated film by him (2nd to Wild at Heart)

reply

Post titles like this are ridiculous
