it's not all that complicated

It's about a real young girl who went to Hollywood in the 1950s and became unhinged due to Hollywood corruption and her dreams never being fulfilled.

Later, her life story is being made into a film and we see the real people interacting with the actors that play them and then there is a third level.

We also see a few actors playing the actors who were making the film. You just have to sort out who they are.

What is the bum and the blue box.

I think some of it is symbolism.... I have not figured it ALL out and I do acknowledge many will not agree with me.

I think the blue box is just a gateway into a parallel universe where "Betty" is able to interact with people in the future. But, the film is like a "Memento" so some of the scenes in the first part actually happened AFTER she passed through that blue box. The film is not shown in sequential time lines.

The bum symbolizes a frightening parallel universe where if you take the wrong "road" your life can go in a totally different frightening direction.

Just no

You're actually completely correct but there's about another 10 films you haven't seen yet. You're right but it only covers 1/10 of what's happening. There are many films and stories in Mulholland Drive. Don't be fooled by the idea that one idea or scenario is the answer to the whole thing.

She has a kind of psychiatric cabaret. Very good. There was something about Suez.

I guess that's one way of looking at it. I've always thought that it was about a girl named Denise who goes to Hollywood but finds out she's not actually that good at acting, and then gets cheated on by Camilla, so she gets pushed over the edge and hires a hit man to kill her, but afterward she regrets it all and goes into a state of depression, in her depression she has a dream that Camilla survives the assassination attempt but loses her memory, in the dream Denise is a younger version of herself that is better at acting than in real life, named Betty, in the dream everyone that wrongs her ends up having bad things happen to them, most notably is the director, but once she wakes up she is even more depressed and decides to kill herself.

I Like the explanation given in another thread about the first two hours being a dream (after she killed Camilla) of her fantasy of how her life should be, while the last half hour she wakes up and faces the reality of what she has done. She struggled with being inferior to Camilla in acting, being jilted by her, yet still loving her. The beginning of the movie has some loud snoring, while the last 30 minutes or so begins with someone telling her to wake up...which supports this theory. When I watched the movie after reading that post everything really did seem completely uncomplicated. It is posted by maycock-andrew under the thread Can Someone Explain the Whole Movie to Me.....he did an excellent job of explaining the movie (IMO) in just a few sentences.
