Purpose & Significance of the Cowboy, and the person by the dumspter?

I didn't understand this movie when I first saw it, and am still a bit fuzzy despite reading the blogs. OK, I guess it was a before (what might have been) and after (what was) look at a violent relationship. Still:

Can you explain the purpose/significance of the cowboy?

Also, can you explain the man (woman?) behind the dumpster by the restaurant?

Thanks.

I think that the cowboy represented John Wayne. He was a huge figure in support of the McCarthy Era blacklists. Watch Trumbo if you get a chance.
