also his whole travel has something to do with the characters personal redemption to his family....he is offered a couple of times during his journey by strangers who will take him to his brother....but the fact that he wants to make his journey the long difficult trip all on his own...is a way of showing his brother how much he really loves him and wanted to make peace

It also shows he´s a stubborn individualist always doing things "his way", even when it´s stupid and harmful to himself (remember the early scene with the doctor - he´ll rather die than change his diet and quit smoking).

Yes, that's it. The problem isnt the transportation, its him. Its a task he most complete on his own. I'm 29 but I can understand that. Its like - His old, but he still can manage on his own.
