5.1 for females under 18

5.1 is the average vote for females under 18 on this movie, every other age group gave this film a pretty high rating. I wonder why it is so low with females under 18. Go look what kind of ratings they gave movies like Pearl Harbor and Secret Window though.

Are you seriously wondering? Look who's starring in those flicks...

reply

I guess that was kind of dumb to say because I wasn't really wondering but it's kind of shame a low ranking like that holds this film back on the top 250

When I was under 18 I would have thought this was the most boring, pointless movie ever. Now, in my late 40's, having lost loved ones to death and others to misunderstanding and pride, I think it's wonderful. Sometimes there are books and movies that you have to have lived a while to really appreciate.

Funny, when I first saw your subject line I thought you were suggesting 5.1 Stereo Sound for young girls to fully appreciate this film. It made no sense to me, but now I see what you were commenting on.

Well, I'm a bit surprised but then thinking about it more I see how that age group might not have been dramatically swooned by this film. They need cardboard scripted cues and glycerine tears to know how and when to feel emotionally connected to a film. A Faith Hill song ringing in the background helps too, I guess.

reply

Good post! But isnt 5.1 Surround Sound?

reply

A full quarter of the votes are zero ( http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0166896/ratings-female_age_1 ) from that demographic. This can only mean they turned it off after the first few seconds of seeing it was a slow, boring film on the surface. I would have too when I was under 18 even being a male.

The female mind doesn't even start properly functioning until they reach the age of 21, so don't worry about it too much. And of course Secret Window is going to get a good rating from them. Chicks dig Johnny Depp a bit more than Richard Farnsworth. They don't much care about acting though, it would seem...

"Alright, Clarissa, explain it all!"

reply

wow the votes of females under 18 are now at 3.0

OMG

"If they had told me it was going to be fifteen years, would it have been easier to endure?"

reply

Well, there's democracy for you... It wouldn't be fair to exclude certain demographics to fit our own judgement, now would it? Let's just be thankful that the influence of these ignorant children is too little to get American Pie -or whatever it is these youngster love nowadays- to the number one spot in our beloved top 250... I'll bet you they're complaining how 'those boring old folk' are keeping their favourites down.

(btw I'm 37)

While I'm only 21, and saw it when I was 20.. I love the straight story, so simplistic, yet so deep and wonderful. Anyone who has had meaningful relationships or heartbreak with family in their life should be able to relate to this

The rating for that age group doesn't surprise me at all though, the average person or majority in that age range just wnats a movie that gives a face value and is easy to watch. THey don't want to think things through and look for deeper meaning or relate to characters. With that known, they shouldn't watch anything with "Lynch" as the director :)

reply

Well, it is lower now, but there are only 50 votes for that demographic. Compared to the 24,000 + votes for both the 9, and 8, I'd say it's a non-factor.

reply

Look at all of Lynch's films (excluding Elephant Man). Women always vote him low, I don't know why :(

With all due respect, every response in this thread is off the mark.

The real reason why the film is rated so low by women under 18 has to do, I strongly suspect, with deliberate campaigning for particular movies on the "IMDB top 250" at the expense of other films.

I first became aware of this when posting recently about the French classic "Children of Paradise". This film was formerly on the IMDB top 250. Currently it's sitting at a 7.9 overall rating based on 4688 votes. A full 47% of the IMDB voters who have seen it have given it a 10/10. Over 75% have rated it at least an 8. Only 703 voters -- about 15% -- rated it a 5 or lower. But of those 703 voters, a full 424 gave it a "zero". That represents almost 10% of voters giving it a zero, and 75% rating it above 8. It just does not make sense if the voting was honest. Despite being considered one of the best movies in French history, it is no longer on IMDB's 250 list. Why?

A clue is found in the "females under 18" brackett. Of 23 females under 18 who voted on "Children of Paradise", a full 15 were giving the film "zero". What's the chance that 65% of females under 18 REALLY consider the movie completely worthless, when 75% of other users consider it great? 8 out of 22 male users under 18 also consider it a "0" while 8 others consider it a "10". Is the movie really "love it or hate it"? Not to that extent. Females aged 18 to 29 contributed as well -- a full 12% rated it a "0" despite the fact that 73% of the same voting group rated it at 8-10. Folks, it just isn't natural. Why is it happening?

Apparently groups of teenage and post-adolescent fan-girls conspired to vote the film a "zero" in order to drive it off the top 250 list to make room for another movie they loved - allegedly "Pirates of the Carribean: Curse of the Black Pearl." Basically you have a bunch of girls all wet over Johnny Depp who have so little cinematic intelligence or integrity that they are willing to give a classic film they've never seen a "zero" just to get more attention for their film. They see the top 250 as a popularity contest and I guess that really is what it is. It's just sad to think about all these ignorant people. Thankfully IMDB does discriminate in rating values against people who habitually give "zero" votes to films, I believe they have a program designed for that but it's not completely fool-proof. The system was designed to eliminate "trolls" who vote films a "zero" just out of spite. But it does not take into account a conspiracy of this type where voters actually agree to rate a particular movie low in order to drive it off the list and promote another film in its place.

Anyway I suspect something similar happened to this movie. For years people have "campaigned" for their favorite movies. I remember in particular the movie "Donnie Darko" had very agressive cult fans using various methods to illegitimately push the movie towards the top of the list. That's why I've always advocated that the IMDB remove the top 250 list, because I think it has contributed to the degeneration of the value of the voter ratings on the board.

Did I not love him, Cooch? MY OWN FLESH I DIDN'T LOVE BETTER!!! But he had to say 'Nooooooooo'

reply

It sounds then that they need to review the voting system algorithm, maybe they need to introduce weightings where votes from trusted reviewers count for more while extreme voters (those with lots of 10s and 0s) count for less.

Being a male at the age of sixteen, I absolutely love this film to death. Being a Lynch fan, I was taken by surprise when I saw it; however, I now believe Lynch should direct another film like this.

On the subject of the 18 year old females, I'm sure many of the guys on this board can remember taking a girlfriend to a movie despite knowing it was horrible. Let's face it, most young women (AND men) don't have the greatest taste in films.
