Movie Keeps Buffering Every Time Sissy Spacek Speaks

My elderly friend Helen and me were excited to finally watch a movie rated G that caters to older people. We had heard The Straight Story (1999) was a great choice, and had even earned Richard Farnsworth an Oscar nomination for Best Actor (over Jim Carrey in Man on the Moon, no less).

The movie tells the story of an old, tired man who takes a trip cross country on a lawn mower. 20 minutes into the movie, and we're ready to stop watching. Sissy Spacek plays his annoying daughter, and every time she speaks she seems to be stuttering and stalling. We checked to see if it was Netflix doing it, but when we ordered it on Amazon Prime Video, it did the same thing. I think the filmmakers made a mistake when dubbing Spacek's role- because she talks like she's mentally off and that's totally not what the character is supposed to be. Big goof on David Lynch's part!

Other then that, the movie was ok. Sort of boring. I think an R rated version would have been more interesting.

yeah it's a very phony performance, and her stutter didn't sound anything like a real stutter. It's like she just paused randomly every few syllables for no discernible reason, but it wasn't a stutter because she could form complete sentences, just with really obnoxious pauses. It's pretty awful work from a great actress, the complete opposite of Farnsworth's naturalistic sincerity.

You're wrong. I was stunned by Sissy Spacek's performance because I know someone who is mentally challenged and who speaks exactly the same way she talks in this movie. Totally believable to me then.

I've known mentally challenged people as well. Spacek's performance was a cartoon.
