NOT THAT BAD AT ALL!!!

Hello fellow Romero fans. George himself rips this to shreads, and considering that I haven't been able to sit through some of his other older films, I was expecting total crap. I was so curious that I actually bought the "Season of the Witch" DVD for "Vanilla", (Which comes as a bonus movie) not "Season". Well, it's been a while now, and I still didn't watch "Season" but I find myself fascinated by "Vanilla"and must have started it at least 10 times, and completed it about 5. It is not Super-Entertaining every second of screentime, (Few movies are) but like "Night of the Living Dead" itself, entertainment-wise it competes with many Hollywood movies of the day at a fraction of the budget. If you haven't seen it, it reminds me of one of those "Swinging London" 60's flicks, only Pittsburgh style, if you can imagine that. You can read about the plot elsewhere, but for it's Time-Capsule value alone, this film is a more interesting way to spend an hour and a half than many contemporary films. If anybody knows Big George, please tell him it's really not as terrible as he might remember.

I agree wholeheartedly. I did the same thing: I bought "Season" so I could watch "Vanilla." I've watched it 6 or 7 times, and (I think) it stands up very well to multiple viewings. It's Romero's one unsung (perhaps Knightriders is also in the same underrated class) film gem. A bottle of spirits is needed to get through "Season."

It's nothing special, and sometimes a bit slow. But I honestly liked it more than Land of the Dead. No joke.

Did you ever get around to watching Season of the Witch? It's brilliant, really. Anne Muffly was great in it too. As with Knightriders, which had bikes in it when it wasn't a bike movie, it was about living a philosophy, Witch isn't about witches it's about helplessness and the illusion of empowerment, and the meaninglessness that is suburbia, etc.

I started it I believe, Mike. If you recommend it so strongly, I'll dig it out and comment as soon as I can.

Mike's right!..I've always liked SOTW...much more successful than the similar themed Rain People by Coppola

reply

Yeah, Season has some powerful moments!
