what? the horses don't talk???

when i went to see it, i thought the horses were gonna talk. they didn't and this made the movie boring. DON'T MAKE AN ANIMATED MOVIE ABOUT ANIMALS IF THEY DON'T TALK!!!!!

Actually, I thought that's what made the movie so great. It gets confusing when all you hear is talking and this really gave you a chance to read their body language. I thought it was incredibly powerful how just a simple voice-over every now and then was perfectly okay. It lets you focus more on what's actually happening with the music, gestures, etc. I loved it! I mean, do you seriously want Spirit to be yelling to his mother and the rest of the herd," NO! Get out of here! You have to get out of here or they'll catch you too! GO!" the first time he got caught? Don't you think the movement of his mouth like a human's would be a little stupid? The paniced and forceful neighing sent the message much clearer and so much better - you could tell exactly what he was "saying" to them. I think this movie was very well done - it's one of my all time favorite animated movies.

I totally agree with wazupducci2003.

The fact that the horses didn't talk is what really made this film so amazing. This wasn't supposed to be a typical, cutesy cartoon for kids. It was trying to portray horses as real animals instead of fantasy cartoon creatures.
And you have to have such high respect for the amazing animators who not only got horse anatomy perfect (as an artist I can agree with the fact that horses are the hardest things to draw due to their complex anatomy), but they also animated that difficult anatomy perfectly AAAAAAANNNNNDDDDDD used real horse noises and movement to get the story across without words! You knew exactly what the horses were saying, thinking, and feeling just by their movements and noises. Very hard task for animators. They didn;t need to break out in a song and dance routine every time the plot changed. Every emotion the horses felt whether it be happiness, fear, sarcasm, love, etc. was perfectly clear without dialogue.
Having the horses talk in this kind of movie would have changed the whole mood completely. These horses were wild and REAL. That was the feeling they needed to keep.
When animals talk & sing in cartoons you don't really see them as the real animal they are portraying. This movie made you feel emotion for real horses. Not a singing and dancing horse, but real horses living in the wild fighting for survival and freedom- cartoon horses living as real horses.

I would hardly say the animation was perfect. In several shots there were major anatomical flaws. But, yes, generally, the animation was pretty accurate.

I'm anespeptic, frasmotic, even compunctuous to have caused you such pericumbobulations...

Yes excelent movie, and it was more superb as the horses didnt talked, understanding only by gestures. Incredible, and for me, one of the best.

I thought that was one of the things that was good about this movie, now i was surpised when i first watched that the horses didnt talk, heck we didnt hear the name Sprit till near the end. But I really enjoyed it, i work with horses, and they did a really good job i was able to read the body lanuges and even though Spirit didnt come out and speak, i could tell what he was thinking. This movie rocked, its diffrent but its still good.

Honestly people this movie can be enjoyed by ANYONE where as a movie where animals who don't shut up and do things people do get generic and stupid are mostly enjoyed by kids. I mean this is so much better than Bambi because it actually shows the beauty of wild horses without giving them cutsey names (Spirit and Rain are not cutesy) and making them into sorry sequels (Bambi 2 was terrible).

Apparently the people who find it boring must think that all animated films about animals should have the animals being used as toy ads for little kids. I don't know if this movie had merchandice but I didn't see Disney-esque marketing.

reply

if horses are boring, Ikalk, why did you waste your time watching the movie? H'm? Seems a little pointless and STupid to me...

the fact that they didn't talk did, as most of the writers above stated, allow us to appreciate that words don't tell you everything. especially in a story like this where humans are talking around the horses. if the horses had spoken at the same time it would have looked stupid and sounded downright confusing.

spirit's body language and the voiceover of his thoughts was a brilliant way for us to see his struggles. i mean, it worked in black beauty didn't it? why should the horses have to move their mouths and speak like people just because it's an animation?

it can really put us back in touch with real horses who don't speak and are just as stumped as Spirit at our behaviour sometimes. plus the horse noises are the best way to hear a horse speaking

My sister ALWAYS brings this up when it somes to Spirit. She hates the fact that they don't talk. I kind of enjoyed the fact that they didn't talked. There was a realistic, emotional factor too it that made them seem like TRUE horses, not cartoons that sing and dance. You didn't need words to tell you the story or anything. I thought the animation was FANTASTIC and the music was great. The talking thing didn't bother me. It made it for like, "that could really happen".

I think it was a good Idea to not have the horses talk, it shows that not all animated movies about animals have to have them talk, and it makes you focus more on what's happening. I agree that it would have been stupid for Spirit to yell at the Herd and his mum to leave, and if they had been talking whilst the humans were it would have been confusing. Because the Humans can't understand the horses, and vice-versa. Also if they were ever to try and make it real life, it would be easier with the horses not talking, but I don't think that making it into a RL picture would be a good idea...

Not only was it innovative for the horses not to talk, but probably saved the studio time and money not having to hire a larger cast to do voices for the horses. If they talked, they'd have to hire voice actors also for
-Young Spirit
-Rain
-Spirit's mother
-The foals
-all the various extras

Plus it'd take additional time to write lines for them and work it into the script. And considering the depth of animation, it really took a heavier workload off the studio. Remember the opening scene alone took seven or so months to do.

Really? I LOVED this movie because horses didn't talk. In almost every cartoon, you have talking animal characters, with at least one being type of annoying joker and one clumsy duffer. Sorta nice and funny, but you clearly see it's cartoon and nothing more. In Spirit I could see horses which were just horses and acted like real horses and this made the movie special. The movie was more realistic and you could watch true happy horses instead of human happiness in animal's body. As I recall when I saw the Spirit poster for the first time and I imagined Spirit talking with Rain or Spirit's momma telling him to go to sleep, I can't even think now about this film looking this way. Spirit: stallion of the Cimarron was not typical cartoon, this cartoon was unique because of natural snorts and whinnies which could bring you to the magical equine world so distant in XXI century, instead of making another dialogue comedy.

yeah it was the most realistic animated movie i've seen but they gave spirit to much "reason" but he sure acted like a stallion and not like those stupid disney horse characters ive seen.

But... the horses did talk! Not in words, but in gestures, music and pictures. Is it the old way to give animals a human touch without make humans in animal-costumes out of them. If there is something to tell that cannot be telled without words, the narrator add some comments and thoughts of Spirit.
And: Before everybody bash on Disney, remember that "Bambi" had a great influence on "Spirit" (yes, in "Bambi" the animals did talk, but dialogue was reduced to the utmost necessary, only approx. 900 words in the whole film). But "Bambi" was was made by the true, "old" Disney, not by the soulness "Disney-money-machine" of today, that lost the ability to tell a good, straight, and heartwarming story!
I think, "Spirit" contains much more of the old Disney-spirit ;-) as the very most modern Disney movies. "Spirit" bring so much back that modern Disney have lost!

"What happened mother? Why did we all run?"
"Man... was in the forest."

reply

My thoughts exactly... By the way, I really like those human gestures and expressions in horses... without them, the movie would've been too serious, and thanks to them it could remain funny and nice cartoon without beeing spoiled by needless speach.

reply

yeah i agree..disney was great back then..bambi is one of my fav movies because its so charming and more realistic then todays disney films

the fact that the horses dont talk is part of what makes the movie so good in my opinion. the fact that there isnt endless dialogue doesnt ruin the movie because it is really easy to understand what the animals are trying to say anyway through tone and expression. having said that, my little sister didnt understand what the horses were "saying" and this left her feeling bored so maybe they alienated some younger viewers. But I think this film is very good anyway.

That first trailer was kind of like when I first saw the trailer for Disney's Dinosaur. It was almost all through motion and action-and then we found out the Dinos talked!

In 'Spirit,' I feel the film oculd have been stronger without the 'thinking' dialogue of Spirit and the Bryan Adams music.

You could understand Spirit through his gestures, let alone his eyebrows.

I disagree. Without the music and the thoughts of Spirit, I would have been lost.

This is true enough for some people, but as I said before, I would have been completely lost.

I agree it was the music and the thinking dialog that maked this film so great!
